Simple Natural Soapmaking: Create 100% Pure and Beautiful Soaps with The Nerdy Farm Wife’s Easy Recipes and Techniques
Jan Berry
5.0
From the bestselling author of 101 Homemade Products for Your Skin, Health and Home comes an amazing collection of 50 recipes and step-by-step tutorials to create easy, quick and beautiful soaps the truly natural way. With more and more people turning to natural skincare products crafted by hand, Jan Berry delivers soap recipes that come together easily, use sustainable nature-derived ingredients and utilize simple decorations that take your soap to the next level without the headache. Sample recipes include Blue Agave Soap, Wild Rosehips Soap, Double Mint Sage Soap and Dead Sea Mud Spa Bar. The recipes are in tune with today’s trends—such as vegan options, shampoo and shaving bars, seasonal soaps such as Pumpkin Spice Soap and soaps highlighting popular ingredients such as goat’s milk and sea salt—while still retaining a rustic, old-fashioned feel.
Many soapers like to adapt recipes adding their own twist, but the chemistry involved can be a challenge. In addition to the recipes, Jan removes the mystery and shares her expertise, gathered from years of natural soapmaking, on valuable topics such as using plant colorants and herbs, substituting oils, resizing a recipe, making hot versus cold process soap and troubleshooting common issues. This book is perfect for beginners, but even more than that Jan’s unique ingredient combinations and techniques make the book a practical and inspiring choice for the modern-day soapmaker.

RECOMMENDED BY THE HANDCRAFTED SOAP & COSMETIC GUILD
-Should become THE book for soapmaking. . . . It's about time someone wrote a book like this. Most are idealistic and inaccurate. This book has a wonderful common sense approach that is SO long overdue. . . . I can recommend it with 100% confidence.- -- Susan Kennedy, Oregon Trail Soaps, Rogue River, Oregon
-Smart it is . . . . A simple, no-nonsense book that cuts through the curmudgery of stifling soap bibles like no other.- -- Shellie Humphries, Harstine Island, Washington
-Way overdue. . . . A gift of common sense caution, proven methods, tried-and-true shortcuts, and some excellent recipes as well, for both the professional/experienced soapmaker and the eager beginner.- -- Deb Petersen, Shepherd's Soap Co., Shelton, Washington
-A great book for beginners, with clear and easy instructions.- -- Anne-Marie Faiola, Bramble Berry Inc., Bellingham, Washington
-I learned more from Smart Soapmaking than from any other soaping book, and I have read quite a few. . . . It's written with the average person in mind, not a chemistry major. Directions are very simple and easy to understand. It really takes the mystery out of making soap.- -- Jackie Pack, Stuart, Virginia
-Groundbreaking . . . . Anne L. Watson [is the] universally respected and loved author/crafter/curator of this lost art for thousands of aspiring soapers . . . . Unquestionably the best book with which to begin. To be precise, it's probably the most accessible, most reader-friendly, and most immediately useful container of information a first-time soapmaker could hope to find.- -- Wishing Willow (blog)

Adding honey when you are combining the sodium hydroxide and water may result in a stronger reaction with more intense heat. The mixture may bubble up quickly and come out of the pot, posing a potential hazard.

Scientific Soapmaking: The Chemistry of the Cold Process
Kevin M. Dunn
4.8
Until now, there were just two kinds of books on soapmaking. Books for the commodity soap industry emphasized the economical production of soap by the ton and were written for those with a background in chemistry and chemical engineering. Books for the emerging craft industry emphasized the production of high-quality soap by the pound and were aimed at those familiar with the format of cookbooks. Makers of handcrafted soap often wish they had paid more attention in chemistry class so that the information of the commodity soap books would be accessible to them. Scientific Soapmaking answers that call by bridging the gap between the technical and craft literatures. It explains the chemistry of fats, oils, and soaps, and it teaches sophisticated analytical techniques that can be carried out using equipment and materials familiar to makers of handcrafted soap. Presented in a college textbook format, Scientific Soapmaking guides students and individual soapmakers alike to formulate questions about soap and design experiments to answer those questions scientifically.

Why Would You Want to Make Your Own Soap?
Most soap available in stores today are not really soaps at all, but, they are detergents. Detergents are a petroleum based product, like gasoline and kerosene. Detergents tend to leave your skin feeling dry, itchy and tight. Alkali, the most common irritant in soap, is commonly blamed for this effect.
Other ingredients in mass-marketed soap have been proven harmful to human health and can cause severe skin irritations in many people. These include ingredients such as DEA, Isopropyl Alcohol, BHT and Triclosan. The most common ingredient in conventional bar soaps is sodium tallowate. Some very famous brands of soaps use chemicals which are of an inferior quality and could prove harmful for a person's skin.
Here's a look at some of the benefits and reasons for using handmade, chemical free soaps:
*Handmade Soaps are generally made using cold process method which lets the ingredients take their own time to interact with each other in as natural way as possible. *Handmade Soap has a major advantage in that glycerine is not removed from the soap and therefore has a powerful moisturizing effect. *Glycerin soap is especially good for sensitive, delicate skin and for children. *Because it is a high quality by-product in the soap making process, a number of commercial soap manufacturers extract the glycerin and sell it as a by-product to be used in high priced beauty products e.g. lotions and skin creams. *Unlike conventional soap, homemade soap may even contain healing properties due to the lack of chemicals in the ingredients. *People who suffer from skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema can find relief by switching to an all-natural and chemical free handmade soap.

Soap Making for Beginners - Your Surefire Way to Learn how to Make Soap
A Quick Start Guide to Making Natural Organic Soaps, Nourishing Your Skin, and Saving Money
Soap Making is a rewarding hobby that has been practiced by many people for years. You are about to enter a very rewarding field that is not only fun but can also save money, and improve your health. Lets explore some of the benefits of Soap Making.
Top 5 Reason to Make Your Own Soap
1. SAVE MONEY! Stop spending your hard earned money on expensive soaps that are made out of unnatural ingredients and cost you a fortune. Instead you will be learning how to make natural and organic soaps that heal and nourish the skin.
2. Beautify your Skin - The fact is your skin is your bodies largest organ. Anything you put on your skin is absorbed by your body and can cause issues that negatively affect your health. When you make your own soap you DECIDE what goes into the soap so that you can reap all the rewards and benefits your selected ingredients have to offer!
3. Making Soap allows you to Avoid Harmful chemicals - Soaps that you buy at most stores contain unhealthy ingredients such as Antibacterial cleansers, Artificial colorants, BHA, Cocamidopropyl, and many more harmful chemicals that age the skin and make you appear old. When you make your own soap it allows you to hand select the ingredients and nourish the skin for a more rejuvenating and healthy experience.
4. Have fun! - Soap Making is a hobby that is easy to get into and fun for everyone in the family. Have your friends over for a Soap Making party. Everyone will have fun doing it and educate themselves with the myriad of ingredients that you can use!
5. Start your Own Business - Many Soap Making businesses started just like you. Reading a book, familiarizing themselves with the process, making their own personal soaps and them creating a thriving business that earns them a nice income.
