The Cake Mix Doctor
Anne Byrn
4.5
The Cake Mix Doctor is in!
And the prescription is simple: By doctoring up packaged cake mix with just the right extras--a touch of sweet butter here, cocoa powder there, or poppy seeds, vanilla yogurt, sherry, eggs, and grated lemon zest for the Charleston Poppy Seed Cake--even the least experienced baker can turn out luscious signature desserts, time after time. The proof is in the taste, and the taste never stops--from Toasted Coconut Sour Cream Cake to Devilishly Good Chocolate Cake; from a to-die-for Caramel Cake and a Holiday Yule Log to cheesecakes, coffee cakes, sheet cakes, pound cakes, bars, brownies, and those all-important frostings, here are 175 fast, foolproof recipes that will transform the art of home baking in America.
Who could believe these cakes came out of a box? Moist, tender, rich, deep, and complexly flavored, without a hint of artificiality, each cake stand up and delivers. But without any of the fuss of baking from scratch. Anne Byrn, an award-wining food writer and self-described purist, creates recipes that employ a cake mix's strengths---convenience, ease-of-use, dependability, and almost imperviousness to overbeating, underbeating, overbaking, and underbaking.
In addition to the recipes are the Cake Mix Doctor's Q&A's, extensive "Doctor Says" tips, lists--15 Beautiful Birthday Cakes, 15 Cakes That Will Cash in at a Bake Sale--and more, all illustrated in a full-color photographic insert.

Pie in the Sky
Remy Lai, Remy Hii, et al
4.5
When eleven-year-old Jingwen moves to a new country, he feels like he's landed on Mars. School is torture, making friends is impossible since he doesn’t speak English, and he's often stuck looking after his (extremely irritating) little brother, Yanghao.
To distract himself from the loneliness, Jingwen daydreams about making all the cakes on the menu of Pie in the Sky, the bakery his father had planned to open before he unexpectedly passed away. The only problem is his mother has laid down one major rule: the brothers are not to use the oven while she's at work. As Jingwen and Yanghao bake elaborate cakes, they'll have to cook up elaborate excuses to keep the cake making a secret from Mama.
Told in prose and graphic novel elements, this middle-grade novel is about a boy's immigration experience, his annoying little brother, and their cake-baking hijinks!

At the beginning of Pie in the Sky, I wasn’t sure where it was going, but by the end I was sobbing. I realize that I’ve really picked some deep books here! It’s about two brothers. It never says exactly what country they’re from—I know the author was born in Indonesia, but grew up in Singapore—but they come to Australia. They don’t speak English, but they have to integrate. You learn that the reason they’ve come to Australia is because their parents had a wish for them to have a better life. But you know throughout that their papa is not there. [source]

Momofuku Milk Bar
Christina Tosi, David Chang
4.4
The highly anticipated complement to the New York Times bestselling Momofuku cookbook, Momofuku Milk Bar reveals the recipes for the innovative, addictive cookies, pies, cakes, ice creams, and more from the wildly popular bakery.
A runaway success, the Momofuku cookbook suffered from just one criticism among reviewers and fans: where were Christina Tosi’s fantastic desserts? The compost cookie, a chunky chocolate-chip cookie studded with crunchy salty pretzels and coffee grounds; the crack pie, a sugary-buttery confection as craveable as the name implies; the cereal milk ice cream, made from everyone’s favorite part of a nutritious breakfast—the milk at the bottom of a bowl of cereal; the easy layer cakes that forgo fancy frosting in favor of unfinished edges that hint at the yumminess inside. Momofuku Milk Bar finally shares the recipes for these now-legendary riffs on childhood flavors and down-home classics—all essentially derived from ten mother recipes—along with the compelling narrative of the unlikely beginnings of this quirky bakery’s success. It all started one day when Momofuku founder David Chang asked Christina to make a dessert for dinner that night. Just like that, the pastry program at Momofuku began, and Christina’s playful desserts helped the restaurants earn praise from the New York Times and the Michelin Guide and led to the opening of Milk Bar, which now draws fans from around the country and the world.
With all the recipes for the bakery’s most beloved desserts—along with ones for savory baked goods that take a page from Chang’s Asian-flavored cuisine, such as Kimchi Croissants with Blue Cheese—and 100 color photographs, Momofuku Milk Bar makes baking irresistible off-beat treats at home both foolproof and fun.

And then I want to show how versatile bread is. Each of the breads in this book has a "spin off" dish - starter, salad, main course or dessert - that the loaf is very much part of. How to Have Your Cake and Your Skinny Jeans Too: Stop Binge Eating, Overeating and Dieting For Good Get the Naturally Thin Body You Crave From the Inside Out (Thinside Out)
Josie Spinard
4.2
YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN STOP BINGE EATING (OR FEELING OUT OF CONTROL WITH FOOD) AND BE THIN!
Get ready, this book will change your life.
You are about to finally uncover the single reason why you've been experiencing such an uphill battle with food and your weight. And far more importantly...
I am going to teach you the skills you need to win the food fight once and for all--without dieting.
If you're looking for a real, proven step-by-step solution to stop overeating and binge eating for good--so you can finally get thin and get on with your amazing life--then this book is for you.
Is food your best friend--and your worst enemy?
Are you stuck in a relentless tug-of-war between wanting (desperately) to lose weight, and the out-of-control urge to eat?
Does your firm morning resolve to "be good" with food consistently crumble into a night of takeout on the couch, watching TV with Ben & Jerry.
Do you love food, but at the same time, part of you hates it with a passion, and would be perfectly happy if you never ate again--if it just meant you could finally be thin?
Let me come right out and say it. It's not you!
There are clear-cut, solvable reasons why your eating currently feels frustrating and at times painfully out of control.
You've simply been trying to solve the problem (excess weight and overeating) with a solution (dieting and exercise) that does nothing to resolve the real reasons you feel so out of control with food.
The problem is not your lack of nutritional knowledge.
Knowing how many calories (or carbs!) are in a thick fudgy brownie does absolutely nothing to equip you with the skills to stop binge eating it after a long hard day at work.
Are you going to scream if another weight loss book tells you to "take a bath" instead of binge eating?
Overeating and binge eating are learned behavioral patterns that can be eradicated once you learn a few simple actionable psychological skills.
But not the type of "fluff psychology" you find in most emotional eating books that advise you to "take a walk", "read a book" or "take warm bath" when you feel the urge to overeat. Really? That advice is absolutely useless. (And maddening!)
As if when you're in that pre-binge frenzy, parked outside the minimart tearing into a bag of chips and a box of donuts, you're going to hear that advice and say, "Wow, why didn't I think of that? I'll put down these salty grease glistening chips and thick chocolate frosted donuts and head home to read Pride and Prejudice." Not so much.
The solution to binge eating and overeating is found in step-by-step research based learn-able skills that prevent and eliminate overeating on the spot.
The skills (you'll be happy to know) do not include deprivation or willpower.
Since willpower and deprivation don't actually work. I mean, if they did work to yield lasting weight loss we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. Right?
Find out exactly why your best weight loss efforts have failed in the past--and more importantly, exactly what you can do to change it. Today.
Learn how to eliminate the single behavior that 70 years of scientific research proves causes overeating, binge eating, and feeling out of control with food Uncover the secret to being able to keep any food in your house--without it calling your name Discover the two keys that make it a cinch to stop eating any food when you've had enough (even chocolate cake or a cheeseburger!)

BakeWise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking with Over 200 Magnificent Recipes
Shirley O. Corriher
4.2
Great day in the morning, BakeWise is out! You are holding the book that everyone has been waiting for. Sure enough, Shirley did not hold back—it's all here. Lively and fascinating, BakeWise reads like a mystery novel as we follow sleuth Shirley while she solves everything from why cakes and muffins can be dry to génoise deflation and why the cookie crumbles.
With her years of experience from big-pot cooking for 140 teenage boys and her classic French culinary training to her work as a research biochemist at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Shirley manages to put two and two together in unique and exciting ways. Some information is straight out of Shirley's wildly connecting brain cells. She describes useful techniques, such as brushing puff pastry with ice water—not just brushing off the flour—making the puff pastry easier to roll. The result? Higher, lighter, and flakier pastry. And you won't find these recipes anywhere else, not even on the Internet. She can help you make moist cakes; flaky pie crusts; shrink-proof perfect meringues that won't leak but still cut like a dream; big, crisp cream puffs; amazing French pastries; light génoise; and crusty, incredibly flavorful, open-textured French breads, such as baguettes and fougasses.
There is simply no one like Shirley Corriher. People everywhere recognize her from her TV appearances on the Food Network and ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with Snoop Dogg as her fry chef.
Restaurant chefs and culinary students know her from their grease-splattered copies of CookWise, an encyclopedic work that has saved them from many a cooking disaster. With numerous “At-a-Glance” charts, BakeWise gives busy people information for quick problem solving. BakeWise also includes Shirley's “What This Recipe Shows” in every recipe. This section is science and culinary information that can apply to hundreds of recipes, not just the one in which it appears.
For years, food editors and writers have kept CookWise, Shirley's previous book, right by their computers. Now that spot they've been holding for BakeWise can be filled.
BakeWise does not have just a single source of knowledge; Shirley loves reading the works of chefs and other good cooks and shares their information with you, too. She applies not only her expertise but that of the many artisans she admires, such as famous French pastry chefs Gaston Lenôtre and Chef Roland Mesnier, the White House executive pastry chef for twenty-five years; Bruce Healy, author of Mastering the Art of French Pastry; and Bonnie Wagner, Shirley's daughter-inlaw's mother. Shirley also retrieves "lost arts" from experts of the past such as Monroe Boston Strause, the pie master of 1930s America. For one dish, she may give you techniques from three or four different chefs plus her own touch ofscience—“better baking through chemistry.” She adds facts about the right temperature, the right mixing speed, and the right mixing time for the absolutely most stable egg foam, so you can create a light-as-air génoise every time.
BakeWise is for everyone. Some will read it for the adventure of problem solving with Shirley. Beginners can cook from it and know exactly what they are doing and why. Experienced bakers find out why the techniques they use work and also uncover amazing French pastries out of the past, such as Pont Neuf (a creation of puff pastry, pâte à choux, and pastry cream in honor of the Paris bridge) and Religieuses, adorable “little nuns” made of puff pastry filled with a satiny chocolate pastry cream and drizzled with mocha icing to form a nun's habit.
Some will want it simply for the recipes—incredibly moist whipped cream pound cake made with heavy cream whipped slightly beyond the soft-peak stage and folded into the batter; flourless fruit soufflés (puréed fruit and Italian meringue); Chocolate Crinkle Cookies, rolled first in granulated sugar and then in confectioners' sugar for a crunchy black-and-snow-white surface with a gooey, fudgy center. And Shirley's popovers are huge.

The Secret to Hummingbird Cake
Celeste Fletcher McHale
4.1
“Why won’t you just tell me what’s in that cake?” I’d been trying to get Laine’s recipe for years. We all had.
When all else fails, turn to the divine taste of hummingbird cake.
In the South you always say “yes, ma’am” and “no, ma’am.” You know everybody’s business. Football is a lifestyle not a pastime. Food—especially dessert— is almost a religious experience.
