In Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, John Perkins argues that the US and other powerful countries use economic coercion to control weaker nations. He claims that the US employs a network of economic hit men (EHMs) who use debt, fear, and division to manipulate countries into serving American interests. Perkins contends that this system of economic control is supported by a corporatocracy that benefits a select group of people at the top. He also argues that China has adopted similar tactics to expand its influence in Africa and Southeast Asia. Perkins believes that individuals can help shift from a destructive economy to one that nurtures by using online platforms to inspire executives to act...

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man Summary The Mechanics and History of Economic Assassins

The tactics employed by Economic Hit Men (EHMs) have evolved and expanded globally over time. According to Perkins, the initial wave of modern EHMs began after the Second World War and continued until the September 11 attacks in 2001. Following the 9/11 attacks, the US military assumed a central role, and EHMs advanced the strategy significantly, using it in the US and other wealthier nations. China then began a third wave of EHMs, changing the strategy beyond what the US had done and taking it to areas the US was ignoring as it focused on the Middle East.

EHMs and Neo-Colonialism

Perkins’s three “waves” of EHMs can be seen as a modern restatement of the concept of “neo-colonialism,” which was first articulated by Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah in the 1960s. Nkrumah argued that, after World War II, the US and other Western powers shifted from direct colonial rule to more subtle forms of economic control. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man Summary Consequences, Contemporary Players, and Paths Toward an Economy of Life

Perkins explains that the destructive economy prioritizes immediate financial gains, leading to ecological and societal harm. This system benefits only a narrow segment of society, irrespective of the societal and ecological costs. It pushes companies to exploit one another, the population, and the natural world, ruining resources necessary for their sustained survival. It prioritizes exploitative and consumer-focused products and services over those that improve living standards. Additionally, the death economy is heavily influenced by financial activities that aren't productive, including the financialization of markets, stock manipulation, and gambling. It doesn't consider factors like environmental damage and worker exploitation when evaluating metrics like profit, GDP, and more.

(Shortform note: In In Defense of Globalization, economist Jagdish Bhagwati argues that globalized capitalism has improved living standards for millions, not just a small elite. He contends that countries integrating into the global economy experience faster growth and reduced poverty. Bhagwati acknowledges that multinational corporations can sometimes...
