Fresh AiR • Answers in Reason - Joe Johnstone, Dave Rowlands, Martijn, Kristyn Pike & Guests

‘Fresh AiR’ is a podcast, hosted by Joe, Martijn and Dave. It is part of Answers in Reason but hopes to bring a fresh perspective on a number of topics. Philosophy, Science, and the intersection with social and secular issues is our main focus; we aim to ascend the tribe and do more than simply claim to be sceptics by actually taking the time to understand what scepticism is. Season 1 first launched in 2019 and other authors became a part of the crew. Over time we grew and also undertook our live stream, the "SciPhi" show on YouTube

  • “Religious People are Dumb” – SciPhi Shortz: BAM!

In the latest Fresh AiR episode, speaker Joe challenges the divisive meme that suggests religious believers lack the intellect of their atheist counterparts. Addressing this stereotype head-on, Joe delves deep into the common arguments and presents a case for a more respectful discourse. Analyzing the oft-cited IQ statistics, he highlights the nuanced factors that influence intelligence measurements, pressing the point that a person's faith—or lack thereof—should not be a litmus test for intellectual capability.

Joe goes further to debunk the myth that theism is incompatible with high intellect, by showcasing examples of brilliant minds with firm religious convictions. By arguing against the idea that atheism confers superior rationality or morality, he advocates for a shift in how inter-belief conversations are conducted. Promoting a culture of open-mindedness and respectful dialogue, Joe invites listeners to partake in conversations that are based on informed, rational exchanges, ensuring a richer understanding and mutual respect between differing worldviews.

  • “Santa vs God” – SciPhi Shortz: BAM!

In the most recent "Fresh AiR" podcast episode, Joe tackles the simplistic parallels often drawn between the iconic figure of Santa and the concept of God as portrayed in atheistic circles. In a thought-provoking session, Joe dissects the inherent complexities of religious belief, highlighting the inadequacies of this popular comparison. He addresses the incompatibility of juxtaposing a mythical character born from folklore with a divinity deeply woven into the moral and metaphysical fabric of numerous cultures.

Joe's detailed discourse in this episode of "Fresh AiR" critiques the use of the Santa-God analogy as a counter-theistic argument, suggesting that it undermines the substantial philosophical and evidence-based discussions surrounding the existence of God. He advocates for a more effective critique of theism that respects the depth and historical significance of religious beliefs rather than resorting to reductive rhetoric. "Fresh AiR" offers an insightful exploration into the nature of theistic belief systems through the lens of popular cultural references.

  • The Null Hypothesis: How it Relates to Atheism and God – SciPhi Shortz

In this episode of Fresh AiR, Joe delves into the nuances of scientific hypotheses and their negating counterparts, the null hypotheses, and explores their intriguing relationship to atheism and the concept of God. The discussion begins by clarifying the distinction between the two types of hypotheses—how a hypothesis offers a testable prediction about a phenomenon, while a null hypothesis serves as a tool to assert that any differences detected in experimental results may simply be due to chance.

The dialogue then shifts towards the realm of the immeasurable, such as the existence of a deity, highlighting how such metaphysical claims evade the realm of scientific inquiry due to their unfalsifiable nature. Moreover, the episode examines how atheism, depending on its definition, can fall into the same category of non-testability. Joe artfully illustrates these concepts with a potential hypothesis on the efficacy of prayer, pitting it against its null equivalent to underscore the critical traits of testability and falsifiability that ground scientific research, thereby fostering an understanding of their vital place within the scientific method.

  • “We Are All Born Atheist!” – SciPhi Shortz: BAM!

Delve into the intricacies of atheism with Joe on the latest installment of Fresh AiR, where common understandings are challenged, and definitions are dissected. Through a focused examination, the episode cuts through the layers between active disbelief and a mere absence of belief in deities. This granular look at atheism not only clarifies common misconceptions but ensures listeners grasp the various non-theistic positions that are often overlooked in broader discussions.

In this edition, Joe confronts the prevalent notion that we all begin life as atheists, presenting his critique against such an argument's logical and epistemological foundations. He meticulously deconstructs the reasons why classifying newborns as atheists is not only conceptually flawed but potentially undermines the atheistic stance as one of informed rationality. Instead, he offers an alternative perspective, viewing infants as naturally predisposed to finding patterns and reasons in their surroundings - a trait potentially paving the way to supernatural beliefs rather than a default state of atheism.
