The US hopes to see geothermal generate 8.5% of electricity by 2050, but the cost and accessibility to tap the resource pose significant challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below we\u2019ll explore what geothermal energy is, its benefits and downsides, and prospects for its expansion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-geothermal-energy\">Geothermal Energy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>America is the top global producer of geothermal energy, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/geothermal\/geothermal-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heat energy resource<\/a> that proponents tout as reliable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly\u2014but that generates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/united-states\/2023\/03\/14\/in-america-climate-hawks-and-big-oil-alike-cheer-geothermal-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less than 1%<\/a> of the nation\u2019s power. Given geothermal\u2019s considerable benefits, why aren&#8217;t we relying more on geothermal energy in the US?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-geothermal-energy\"><strong>What Is Geothermal Energy?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The word \u201cgeothermal\u201d means \u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-02\/DOE-EE-2680-GTO-Geothermal-Overview-8-5x11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>heat from the earth<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u201d and refers to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/geothermal-systems-and-monitoring-hydrothermal-features.htm#:~:text=Geothermal%20refers%20to%20any%20system,hence%20the%20%E2%80%9Chydro%E2%80%9D).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>any system that moves heat inside the Earth to its surface<\/strong><\/a>. For example, volcanoes and hot rocks (without water) are geothermal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A subset of geothermal is<strong> \u201chydrothermal<\/strong>,\u201d<strong> a system in which water (in liquid or vapor state) helps transfer heat from inside the Earth to the surface<\/strong>. For example, hot springs and geysers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sourcing-geothermal-energy\"><strong>Sourcing Geothermal Energy&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/geothermal\/geothermal-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">There are three types of geothermal plants<\/a> that convert geothermal (hydrothermal) heat to electricity :&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Dry steam<\/strong>: This type of plant taps steam from ground fractures and creates the <a href=\"https:\/\/thecostguys.com\/business\/build-geothermal-power-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most affordable<\/a> geothermal energy. But future buildout of this type of plant is near impossible because only two known sources of natural steam exist in the US and one of them, Yellowstone National Park, is protected.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Flash steam<\/strong>: This type of plant (<a href=\"https:\/\/thecostguys.com\/business\/build-geothermal-power-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the most cost-effective to build<\/a>) pumps hot underground water into a surface level tank. That water is mixed with cooler water that rapidly turns (\u201cflashes\u201d) the liquid into vapor, which drives a turbine that activates a generator to create electricity.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Binary cycle<\/strong>: These plants (<a href=\"https:\/\/thecostguys.com\/business\/build-geothermal-power-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the most likely to be developed in the future<\/a>) cross hot water with a secondary, lower boiling point fluid that\u2019s converted into a vapor, which turns a turbine.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These plants are typically located\u2014and restricted to development in\u2014Western US states, where geothermal is most easily accessed because three critical elements exist underground:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Heat<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Fluid<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Permeability<\/strong> (the ability of water to flow freely through underground rock).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In parts of the US where these three elements don\u2019t exist together (most of the country), it\u2019s harder to tap and expand geothermal energy. For example, you can\u2019t derive the heat from underground hot rocks without fluid and permeability. However,<em> <\/em><strong>you <em>can<\/em> tap hot rocks\u2019 heat by artificially creating reservoirs and an Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-geothermal-benefits\"><strong>Geothermal Benefits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Geothermal energy proponents say it comes with a host of benefits, including that it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twi-global.com\/technical-knowledge\/faqs\/geothermal-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Environmentally friendly<\/strong><\/a>. Geothermal plants give off just one-sixth of the carbon dioxide emitted by natural-gas power plants.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twi-global.com\/technical-knowledge\/faqs\/geothermal-energy\/pros-and-cons#WhataretheAdvantagesofUsingGeothermal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Renewable, reliable, and sustainable<\/strong><\/a>: The naturally replenishing resource isn\u2019t compromised by weather conditions, making it readily available 24\/7, 365 days a year, for the long-haul.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twi-global.com\/technical-knowledge\/faqs\/geothermal-energy\/pros-and-cons#WhataretheAdvantagesofUsingGeothermal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>A long-term cost saver<\/strong><\/a>. Once plants are built, geothermal offers savings of up to 80% compared to fossil fuels.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/geothermal\/geothermal-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Capable of providing 10% of US power needs if fully tapped<\/strong><\/a>, which would reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/reliance-on-fossil-fuels\/\">fossil fuel reliance<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-geothermal-expansion-barriers\"><strong>Geothermal Expansion Barriers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its upsides, significant obstacles limit geothermal expansion, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twi-global.com\/technical-knowledge\/faqs\/geothermal-energy\/pros-and-cons#WhataretheAdvantagesofUsingGeothermal%20energy%20is%20an%20expensive%20resource%20to%20tap%20into,%20with%20price%20tags%20ranging%20from%20around%20$2-$7%20million%20for%20a%20plant%20with%20a%201%20megawatt%20capacity.%20However,%20where%20the%20upfront%20costs%20are%20high,%20the%20outlay%20can%20be%20recouped%20as%20part%20of%20a%20long-term%20investment.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>High upfront costs<\/strong><\/a>. Site exploration and drilling are expensive\u2014costing upwards of $7 million to build a single geothermal plant.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twi-global.com\/technical-knowledge\/faqs\/geothermal-energy\/pros-and-cons#WhataretheAdvantagesofUsingGeothermal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Limited extraction sites<\/strong><\/a>. Geothermal plants can only be built where the resource is easily accessible.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/united-states\/2023\/03\/14\/in-america-climate-hawks-and-big-oil-alike-cheer-geothermal-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Permitting challenges<\/strong><\/a>. Ninety percent of natural geothermal resources are on federal land, and it can take seven to ten years to conduct requisite environmental assessments \u2014and that doesn\u2019t account for potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/11\/burning-man-sues-biden-administration-over-geothermal-project.html#:~:text=Organizers%20of%20the%20art%20and,exploration%20project%20in%20northwestern%20Nevada.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuits<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twi-global.com\/technical-knowledge\/faqs\/geothermal-energy\/pros-and-cons#WhataretheAdvantagesofUsingGeothermal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Earthquakes triggered by drilling<\/strong><\/a>. Some call EGSs \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/geothermal-energy-is-the-new-fracking-2014-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">geothermal fracking<\/a>,\u201d because the process injects millions of gallons of water and chemicals into wells at high pressure to fracture deep, hot rock\u2014which can trigger earthquakes.
