However, they believe that technology can be reprogrammed to better fit into people&#8217;s lives and help society improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading for more on how we can insert human values into our gadgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-designing-technology-that-reflects-users-values\"><strong>Designing Technology That Reflects Users\u2019 Values<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuang and Fabricant write that a strategy to create a user-friendly future is to combine technology and human values by designing technologies that reflect society\u2019s values. To return to the previous ideals of the user experience design industry\u2014like when consumer products were linked to social progress in the 1920s\u2014companies must <strong>prioritize the users\u2019 specific goals<\/strong>: things like productivity, creative expression, improved health, more equitable access to services and information, and more meaningful social connections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningpeople.com\/uk\/blog\/tech\/7-examples-of-great-technology-that-is-improving-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apps on the market that are based on consumers\u2019 goals<\/a> include apps for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-meditation-mindfulness\/\">meditation<\/a> and apps that help people monitor health conditions like diabetes. One potential factor distinguishing \u201chealthy\u201d apps from addictive ones may include the revenue model: Apps that rely on advertising revenue benefit from users <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/why-more-is-less\/\">maximizing<\/a> screen time and viewing more ads. On the other hand, paid subscription models may rely more on customer satisfaction and less on ad revenue for profitability, making it less likely that the company will use addictive design principles.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors assert that <strong>the basic principles of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/user-friendly-design\/\">user-friendly design<\/a> can be adapted in infinite ways to better people\u2019s lives<\/strong>. For example, developing more advanced telehealth\u2014accessing health services remotely using a cell phone or other device\u2014could help make health care more equitable and affordable for people living in rural areas. In terms of social networks, Kuang and Fabricant suggest that social media could be re-envisioned to foster connections while allowing users to maintain their autonomy over their attention and mental well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Combating Harmful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/negative-impact-of-technology-on-society\/\">Effects of Technology<\/a><\/strong><br><br>Nir Eyal, the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/hooked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Hooked<\/em><\/a>, discusses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nirandfar.com\/tech-companies-addicting-people-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">double-edged sword of habit-forming technologies<\/a> as well as some practical strategies that companies could use to help consumers maintain balanced relationships with technology. He acknowledges that the same <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/hooked\/introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">techniques<\/a> described in <em>Hooked<\/em> to help people form healthy habits, like exercising regularly, can also be used to make people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/humans-are-addicted-to-technology\/\">addicted to technology<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><br>Some of his recommendations for companies to counteract this behavior include ending the auto-start feature for the next episode on a video streaming platform, having a company ask users if they\u2019d like to limit their use to a specific number of hours, and deactivating social media newsfeeds during certain times of the day (upon request). He writes that while companies shouldn\u2019t arbitrarily decide on an acceptable amount of time to spend on an app or website, companies should at least be obligated to reach out to users and offer safeguards\u2014especially since they have detailed information on those users\u2019 online habits.&nbsp;<br><br>Eyal\u2019s recommendations are optional modifications to restrict the use of products that are already designed to keep people engaged as long as possible, whereas Kuang and Fabricant advocate designing different technologies that are inherently beneficial for users.&nbsp;<br><br>However, one main challenge of encouraging values-based technology design is the profit motive that encourages the exploitation of consumers. Some people argue that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.promarket.org\/2020\/10\/27\/addictive-social-media-need-regulation-competition-digital-platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antitrust laws are the best tool we have<\/a> for combatting harmful technologies. These advocates suggest that if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/executive-order-14036\/\">antitrust laws<\/a> encourage more competition among big tech companies, it\u2019s more likely that companies will compete by developing innovative mental health safeguards.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is there a connection between technology and human values?
