The concentration of glucose in our bodies shouldn\u2019t increase by more than 30 mg\/dL after we eat\u2014anything above that is considered a glucose spike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Why Current Blood Sugar Tests May Not Be Effective Enough<\/strong><br><br>Because glucose levels are important indicators of many health conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.testing.com\/glucose-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tests that measure glucose are a common part of regular doctor\u2019s visits.<\/a> Your doctor will most likely want to test your glucose during your yearly exam if you\u2019re 45 years or older, you\u2019re overweight, you have a family history of diabetes, or you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.<br><br>Despite glucose <em>spikes<\/em> over 30 mg\/dL specifically being an important contributor to many health issues, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/diagnosis-diet\/201812\/the-number-one-tool-improving-your-health-year#:~:text=Your%20Doctor%20Doesn%E2%80%99t%20Order%20the%20Right%20Tests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the tests that doctors most commonly use<\/a> to determine your risk of glucose-related diseases (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/peter-attia-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin resistance<\/a> and diabetes) don\u2019t measure glucose levels based on glucose spikes.&nbsp;<br><br>Instead, they measure your fasting levels of glucose (the glucose concentration in your body when it\u2019s at its lowest, as in when you first wake up in the morning) or your hemoglobin A1C (your average glucose levels across three months). Some argue that these tests are too limited because for their results to be abnormal, your metabolism must have already sustained significant damage. Your peak blood sugar levels (about one hour after eating) are better indicators of underlying insulin resistance, which is a primary contributor to type 2 diabetes and other metabolic issues.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In her book <em>Glucose Revolution<\/em>, biochemist Jesse Inchausp\u00e9 explains what happens when your blood sugar spikes and then falls rapidly. According to Inchausp\u00e9, the more frequently you endure glucose spikes of 30 mg\/dL or above after eating, the likelier you are to experience the following problems on a molecular level:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-overloaded-mitochondria-and-free-radicals\"><strong>Overloaded Mitochondria and Free Radicals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Inchausp\u00e9 states that <strong>when we experience a glucose spike, our mitochondria become overloaded.<\/strong> M<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>itochondria are responsible for turning glucose into energy in our cells. This system works well when the amount of glucose our mitochondria receive matches the amount of energy our body needs. However, mitochondria overloaded with too much glucose can\u2019t produce energy efficiently.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Recent research suggests that the harmful effects of high glucose levels on mitochondria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labroots.com\/trending\/cell-and-molecular-biology\/20994\/consuming-eating-sugar-disrupt-cell-mitochondria-powerhouses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">may relate to glucose\u2019s role in decreasing the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in mitochondrial membranes.<\/a> PUFAs perform various functions for mitochondria, including contributing flexibility to their membranes. In one study, experiments on mice found that excess glucose was used to form other types of fatty acids instead of PUFAs. These other fatty acids weren\u2019t as flexible as PUFAs, which put stress on the mitochondrial membranes and made them less efficient.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, having overloaded mitochondria leads to the release of free radicals, which are small molecules that cause damage throughout the body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Free radicals are dangerous molecules because <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/free-radicals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they\u2019re missing an electron,<\/a> which makes them unstable. Most molecules have an even number of electrons, but free radicals have an odd number\u2014to even their number of electrons, they often take one from other molecules in your cells, causing damage to those cells.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-oxidative-stress\"><strong>Oxidative Stress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Inchausp\u00e9, our bodies can handle a certain number of free radicals, but<strong> repeated glucose spikes over time can produce so many that we enter a state called oxidative stress.<\/strong> Our mitochondria become less efficient, and we have less energy. Antioxidants in your diet come from foods like berries, dark leafy greens, nuts, and fish.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-glycation\"><strong>Glycation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Glycation is another process that frequent glucose spikes exacerbate. It happens when glucose molecules touch other molecules in the body. <strong>Glucose damages the other molecules and literally cooks and browns our insides.<\/strong> Once a molecule is glycated, it\u2019s damaged forever. This process is the main reason <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/human-aging\/\">why we age<\/a> and our organs decline, eventually leading to death. It\u2019s unavoidable, but the speed of the process can be increased or decreased. AGEs are dangerous compounds: When they accumulate too quickly, the body can\u2019t get rid of them, and they eventually lead to oxidative stress, inflammation, and various diseases.
