Does natural gas harm the environment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 6, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill into law classifying natural gas as \u201cgreen energy.\u201d Tying the \u201cgreen\u201d label to a fossil fuel that drives global warming has created some confusion, but it\u2019s a potentially powerful branding tool for U.S. leaders seeking to advance their respective causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn about the debate surrounding natural gas and the &#8220;green energy&#8221; label. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-natural-gas-really-green-energy\">Is Natural Gas Really &#8220;Green Energy&#8221;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 6, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill into law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalgasintel.com\/ohio-law-labels-natural-gas-green-but-what-does-it-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classifying natural gas as\u00a0\u201cgreen energy.\u201d<\/a> DeWine isn\u2019t the only U.S. leader putting the concept of \u201cgreen\u201d fossil fuels to work: President Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/biden-admin-works-green-natural-gas-us-vies-top-lng-spot-2023-03-03\/#:~:text=WASHINGTON%2C%20March%203%20(Reuters),producers%20market%20as%20climate%20friendly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently met with foreign officials and energy companies<\/a> to set standards for \u201cclimate-friendly\u201d Certified Natural Gas, as part of a broader effort to secure American footing in the global production and export of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/biden-natural-gas\/\">Liquefied Natural Gas<\/a> (LNG).\u00a0What are all these gasses? Is natural gas &#8220;green energy&#8221;\u2014and why are U.S. leaders in both political parties talking about it? We\u2019ll examine these questions in this article.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-know-your-gasses\">Know Your Gasses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we dive into our first question\u2014is natural gas actually &#8220;green energy&#8221;\u2014it will help to know (a) that natural gas is the root of all fossil fuel energy sources discussed in this article and (b) some common names used to describe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Natural gas<\/strong> <strong>is <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/natural-gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>a fossil fuel formed from plant and animal remains<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s used in residential homes and businesses to heat, cool, and cook. Climate advocates argue that<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/01\/17\/ohio-natural-gas-green-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>natural gas should instead be called \u201cmethane gas\u201d<\/strong><\/a><strong> for its primary component, methane\u2014a major contributor to global warming<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>\u201cGreen\u201d natural gas<\/strong> <strong>is a classification <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalgasintel.com\/ohio-law-labels-natural-gas-green-but-what-does-it-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>that the U.S. doesn\u2019t recognize as legitimate<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s natural gas with the word \u201cgreen\u201d attached to it. <strong>The Ohio bill brought the term to the forefront in recent weeks when it defined \u201cgreen energy\u201d as<\/strong>:<ul><li>Energy made with natural gas<\/li><li>An energy source that either gives off fewer air pollutants (so doesn\u2019t contribute to cumulative air emissions) and is more sustainable and reliable compared with fossil fuels.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Certified Natural Gas is natural gas <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthview.io\/get-certified\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>that an independent, third party has deemed \u201cclimate-friendly<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u201d <\/strong>based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/biden-admin-works-green-natural-gas-us-vies-top-lng-spot-2023-03-03\/#:~:text=WASHINGTON%2C%20March%203%20(Reuters),producers%20market%20as%20climate%20friendly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>methodologies and technologies that are not, as of yet, standardized<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Liquefied Natural Gas is natural gas <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/justenergy.com\/blog\/liquefied-natural-gas-lng-what-and-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>that\u2019s been converted from its gaseous state into a liquid<\/strong><\/a> through a cooling and compression process to make it easier to transport.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-s-calling-natural-gas-green\">Who\u2019s Calling Natural Gas \u201cGreen\u201d?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ohio bill defining natural gas using the climate-friendly moniker was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalgasintel.com\/ohio-law-labels-natural-gas-green-but-what-does-it-mean\/'\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inspired by European regulators\u2019 decision<\/a> last summer to allow new natural gas and power projects to be classified as green energy\u2014enabling them to take advantage of subsidies as the EU faces energy challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Natural gas proponents who support the Ohio bill argue that switching from coal to natural gas has been the top driver of reduced greenhouse gas emissions. They further assert that: \u201cThe [green] label itself is an awareness thing\u2026a first step toward letting people realize that natural gas has been around\u2026we feel it\u2019s helped reduce emissions.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Other natural gas supporters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/01\/17\/ohio-natural-gas-green-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helped Ohio lawmakers disseminate the \u201cnatural gas is green energy\u201d narrative<\/a>, including The Empowerment Alliance, a dark money group linked to the gas industry; and the American Legislative Exchange Council, an anonymously funded network of businesses, state lawmakers, and conservative donors.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-objects-to-the-green-natural-gas-label\">Who Objects to the \u201cGreen\u201d Natural Gas Label?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental experts and advocates contend that natural gas can\u2019t be called \u201cgreen energy\u201d because:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalgasintel.com\/ohio-law-labels-natural-gas-green-but-what-does-it-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>It\u2019s a fossil fuel that emits greenhouse gasses<\/strong><\/a><strong> and contributes to climate change<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/energynews.us\/2022\/12\/12\/ohio-green-natural-gas-bill-motivated-by-esg-investing-concerns-lawmaker-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Some fossil fuels are dirtier than coal<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-green-is-a-non-partisan-color\">Green Is a Non-Partisan Color&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Republicans and Governor DeWine drove the green energy natural gas initiative in Ohio,<strong> they\u2019re not the only U.S. leaders to strategically employ the concept of natural gas as a climate-friendly fossil fuel to advance a political cause<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, <strong>President Biden held talks with global energy companies and leaders <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/biden-admin-works-green-natural-gas-us-vies-top-lng-spot-2023-03-03\/#:~:text=WASHINGTON%2C%20March%203%20(Reuters),producers%20market%20as%20climate%20friendly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>to set standards for Certified Natural Gas<\/strong><\/a>, with the broader goal of securing the United State\u2019s position as top global producer and exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas.
