They\u2019re often homesick, alone while making important life decisions, and separated from the communities they know, all of which contribute to feelings of isolation.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/focus-on-the-future-not-the-past\/\">Focusing on the Future<\/a> Isn\u2019t Always a Bad Thing<\/strong><br><br>Having a future-focused mindset isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing: Studies indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/article\/item\/how_thinking_about_the_future_makes_life_more_meaningful\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thinking about the future can help us in several important ways.<\/a> First, it makes us more likely to choose a long-term, delayed reward over smaller, more immediate rewards. Building new skills that\u2019ll help us achieve a future goal, as young people often do, is one possible example of this.&nbsp;<br><br>Additionally, imagining we\u2019ll do something positive in the future (like achieving a goal or helping someone in need) makes us more likely to actually do it.<br><br>Finally, future prospection can help people with depression and trauma to heal\u2014thinking about what they want from the future allows them to break free from their struggles in the past and present.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-increase-your-impermanence-awareness\">How to Increase Your Impermanence Awareness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, Cain asserts that <strong>you don\u2019t <em>have<\/em> to be close to death to access the benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/impermanence-of-life\/\">impermanence awareness<\/a>.<\/strong> She names three strategies for accepting your mortality and increasing your impermanence awareness:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) Study religious and philosophical traditions that deal with death,<\/strong> such as ancient Stoic writings on mortality. Plants also have good days and bad days like us. Growing them can remind you that nothing lasts forever, whether it\u2019s good or bad.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-appreciate-people\/\">Appreciate people<\/a> while they\u2019re here.<\/strong> Spend time with older people and listen to their stories\u2014this can remind you that they won\u2019t always be around to tell them.
