This requires a functional, rather than a purist, approach to language and grammar. He argues that, if a new slang term or speech pattern helps people communicate nuanced ideas, then it <em>enhances<\/em> language rather than diminishes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pinker uses his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/is-language-innate\/\">innatist theory<\/a> of language to explain why people should generally be open to changing language conventions. Pinker contends that language evolved in humans because of its usefulness for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/social-unity\/\">social cohesion<\/a> and cooperation. Therefore, if the purpose of language is to help people communicate ideas clearly, then people will naturally make modifications to language in pursuit of the goal. This more <strong>functional approach to language is considered \u201cdescriptive\u201d as opposed to the \u201cprescriptive\u201d approach<\/strong>, which focuses on defining rules for how language <em>should<\/em> be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the word <a href=\"https:\/\/grammarist.com\/new-words\/hangry\/#:~:text=It's%20even%20been%20added%20to,hunger.%E2%80%9D%20Sounds%20about%20right.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201changry,\u201d<\/a> a relatively recent addition to dictionaries, concisely conveys the idea of being angry or irritable as a result of hunger. The word has one consistent and commonly understood meaning, and it communicates an idea that people couldn\u2019t previously express in a single word. According to the descriptive school of thought, it\u2019s a valuable term, but according to the prescriptive approach, it\u2019s improper English.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pinker points out that, when people complain about bad grammar or how the younger generation is ruining a language with their slang, they\u2019re ignoring the fact that all language conventions (everything outside of the universal grammar) are completely arbitrary, and <strong>innovations are likely to enhance a language<\/strong>. Therefore, Pinker asserts that people shouldn\u2019t jump to negative conclusions about the intelligence or linguistic competence of anyone who speaks a different dialect or makes up new words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Like Pinker, lexicographers who decide on what words get added to the dictionary have a descriptive approach to language. Lexicographers generally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/e\/getting-words-into-dictionaries\/#:~:text=Short%20answer%3A%20Lexicographers%20typically%20wait,used%20for%20a%20long%20time.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">add a word to official dictionaries<\/a> if it\u2019s used by a lot of people, it\u2019s used in a fairly consistent way, it\u2019s likely to remain in common usage for a while, and it\u2019s useful for the general public. These criteria, which emphasize functionality, support Pinker\u2019s idea that creative language enhances communication.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exercise-embrace-language-innovation\">Exercise: Embrace Language Innovation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pinker takes a functional approach to language, arguing that its purpose is to help people communicate ideas clearly, and people naturally modify the language to communicate better. Therefore, we should be open to new language conventions. Use these exercises to explore the potential benefits of adapting to new modes of language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Write down a few recently invented words or slang terms that you use regularly but that aren\u2019t considered suitable for academic or more formal writing. For example, \u201cYOLO,\u201d \u201csituationship,\u201d or expressions like \u201cThat movie gave me all the feels,\u201d and \u201cMy dog has the zoomies.\u201d<\/li><li>For the words and phrases you listed above, write down why they might have integrated into your vocabulary. Do the terms provide a faster way of communicating an idea, or do they communicate something that other words don\u2019t? Was it something that other people started saying, so you adapted accordingly?<\/li><li>If you were to create a new word or expression and use it in a casual conversation, how would other people react?
