Their book <em>Factfulness <\/em>explores the misconceptions that color our view of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading for several <em>Factfulness<\/em> questions that will test your knowledge and adjust your thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Factfulness<\/em> Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it\u2019s global poverty, epidemics, war, or terrorism, we tend to have a dramatic, negative view of the world\u2014that things are worse than they\u2019ve ever been and they\u2019re getting worse all the time. But, this view is wrong, says the authors. <em>Factfulness: Ten Reasons We\u2019re Wrong About the World\u2014And Why Things Are Better Than You Think<\/em> walks us through ten instincts that distort how we understand global problems and offers solutions for overcoming these instincts\u2014turning our dramatic worldview into a factful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve organized several knowledge-testing and thought-provoking <em>Factfulness<\/em> questions into six exercises that you can do individually or with a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exercise #1: Test Your Knowledge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Answer these questions to examine what you <em>really <\/em>know (and don\u2019t know) about the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In Level 1 countries across the world, what percentage of girls finish primary school?<ul><li>A) 10 percent<\/li><li>B) 60 percent<\/li><li>C) 40 percent<\/li><li>D) 30 percent<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Where does the majority of the world\u2019s population live?<ul><li>A) High-income countries<\/li><li>B) Middle-income countries<\/li><li>C) Low-income countries<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>In the last 20 years, the percentage of the world\u2019s population living at Level 1 has:<ul><li>A) Doubled<\/li><li>B) Remained the same<\/li><li>C) Halved<\/li><li>D) Tripled<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exercise-2-question-your-assumptions\">Exercise #2: Question Your Assumptions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Work through these questions to see how the instincts might be misleading you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have you ever been surprised by learning how much you have in common with someone from another culture? Describe the experience.<\/li><li>Can you think of a negative misconception you once held that turned out not to be true? How can you change your thinking in the future to avoid this?<\/li><li>Can you describe a real-world example of a statistical trend that didn\u2019t follow a straight line? Explain why you think it followed this course.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exercise #3: Check Your Misconceptions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Answer these questions to help you challenge your misconceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What is today\u2019s average life expectancy?<ul><li>A) 70 years<\/li><li>B) 60 years<\/li><li>C) 50 years<\/li><li>D) 40 years<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>There are 2 billion children in the world today. How many will there be in 2100?<ul><li>A) 6 million<\/li><li>B) 4 million<\/li><li>C) 2 million<\/li><li>D) 1 million<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>What percentage of the world\u2019s child population is vaccinated?<ul><li>A) 30 percent<\/li><li>B) 40 percent<\/li><li>C) 50 percent<\/li><li>D) 80 percent<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exercise #4: Getting the Full Picture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Work through these exercises to help you see what\u2019s <em>really <\/em>going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Can you think of a recent phenomenon or trend in the news that generated a lot of unnecessary fear? Describe the situation and how you can avoid succumbing to panic in future situations.<\/li><li>Have you ever made a wrong decision because you only had incomplete data? How can you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/make-better-decisions\/\">make better decisions<\/a> after reading this summary?<\/li><li>Can you think of a stereotype that you once believed? What caused you to accept this generalization, and how can you adjust your thinking to avoid this going forward?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exercise #5: Embracing Complexity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Answer these questions to help you move past oversimplifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why do people at Level 4 think that Level 1 societies can\u2019t change? Knowing what you know now, how can you avoid this misconception?<\/li><li>Have you ever applied your knowledge or expertise to the wrong situation? How can you apply the lessons of this book to make better decisions in the future?<\/li><li>Can you think of a historical example of scapegoating? How could people have avoided succumbing to this instinct?<\/li><li>Have you ever been pressured by a false sense of urgency? Describe the situation.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exercise #6: Applying Factfulness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Answer these questions to apply factfulness in your personal and professional life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What biases or misconceptions do you have that might be inhibiting you from fully understanding the world?<\/li><li>What are your major knowledge gaps? What do you think you can do to increase your knowledge?<\/li><li>Are there blind spots and missed opportunities in your organization that are caused by the instincts discussed in this book? How can you help correct this situation?<\/li><li>Which instinct are you most personally vulnerable to?
