This ultimately led to his arrest in 1962.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading to learn about the arrest of Nelson Mandela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-arrest-of-nelson-mandela\">The Arrest of Nelson Mandela<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand what led to the arrest of Nelson Mandela in 1962, we have to go back to 1948. Mandela explains that racial tensions in South Africa came to a head that year when the National Party (NP) won a general election\u2014which Blacks could not vote in\u2014running on a platform of blatant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/white-male-supremacy\/\">white supremacy<\/a>. The NP\u2019s leader, Daniel Malan, then implemented a sweeping and brutal system of oppression called <em>apartheid<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandela is known as one of history\u2019s greatest peacemakers. In keeping with that reputation, as well as the ANC\u2019s beliefs, he explains that he initially tried to fight back against discrimination and apartheid using nonviolent methods\u2014strikes, petitions, and the like. Eventually, however, Mandela and other ANC leaders became disillusioned with peaceful, legal tactics; <strong>they concluded that Black South Africans would need to fight for their freedom.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ANC tasked Mandela with creating a guerilla force, legally separate from the ANC itself, to fight against the National Party. In 1961, he founded a fighting force called <em>Umkhonto we Sizwe <\/em>(MK for short), which translates to \u201dSpear of the Nation.\u201d The MK\u2014a relatively small force that couldn\u2019t hope to stand against the government\u2019s military\u2014relied on guerrilla tactics to disrupt the NP\u2019s operations, most notably by bombing government buildings and power stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to the ANC\u2019s escalating tactics, government forces aimed to capture and convict party leaders, including Mandela.<strong> Mandela was found and arrested in 1962.<\/strong> He recalls that he used his time in court to make several powerful statements. First, he said that he felt no loyalty to the National Party nor any obligation to follow its laws, as he hadn\u2019t been allowed to vote in the election that put the NP in power. Second, he discussed several occasions when the government had refused to address the ANC\u2019s concerns, thereby leaving violence as their only recourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mandela was convicted of all charges in 1964.<\/strong> Although his crimes would normally carry the death penalty, the NP was facing strong international resistance: Much of the world supported Mandela and opposed apartheid. Executing Mandela would therefore have led to even stronger international censure, likely including harmful economic sanctions and trade embargos. As a result, instead of facing the death penalty, Mandela was sentenced to life in prison.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>The Historical Trend of Political Violence<\/strong><br><br>Politically-motivated violence is often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2020\/10\/01\/political-violence-424157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frightening and controversial<\/a>. Even so, it\u2019s a common theme throughout world history. As one UK Labour Party politician observed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/visible-women\/suffragettes-force-fed-imprisoned-uk-tactics-punishment-history\/188085#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIf%20you%20look%20at%20any%20major%20social%20change%2C%20within%20it%20somewhere%20has%20been%20a%20degree%20of%20militancy%2C%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no major political change occurs without some degree of violence<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><br>In the 20th century, Mandela and the MK\u2019s fight against apartheid was by no means the only notable instance of political violence. Another prominent example from this time period was the suffragette movement in the UK: In the early 1910s, just 50 years before the MK was founded, women in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bl.uk\/votes-for-women\/articles\/suffragettes-violence-and-militancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resorted to violence<\/a> in fighting for their right to vote. Mandela may have even learned about suffragette violence in school and drawn inspiration from it for his own struggle\u2014he received his primary education under British rule, and the suffragette movement was still fresh in British minds at the time.&nbsp;<br><br>The suffragettes\u2019 tactics were very similar to those of the MK, consisting largely of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bl.uk\/votes-for-women\/articles\/suffragettes-violence-and-militancy#:~:text=%E2%80%98We%20are%20fighting%20for%20a%20revolution!%E2%80%99%3A%20the%20escalation%20of%20violence%20and%20militancy%20up%20to%201912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bombing and burning<\/a> infrastructure such as banks and post offices. Notably, their reasons for resorting to violence were also nearly identical to those of the MK: After decades of protesting and demonstrating peacefully, they decided that they had to use more extreme measures to get the men in government to pay attention to their cause.<strong> Just as Mandela observed during his trial, this political violence happened because people with power refused to listen to those without power.<\/strong>&nbsp;<br><br>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/visible-women\/suffragettes-force-fed-imprisoned-uk-tactics-punishment-history\/188085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">government response to suffragettes<\/a> also closely mirrored what happened in South Africa during Mandela\u2019s lifetime. Women who fought for the right to vote may not have faced the death penalty as Mandela risked, but they suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/shooting-of-terence-crutcher\/\">police brutality<\/a>, fines, and harsh prison terms. Many prisoners also endured painful and degrading force-feeding when they attempted hunger strikes.
