A fallacy is a misunderstanding that interferes with your reasoning. Some common fallacies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The middle ground fallacy<\/strong>. This is when there are two opposite options and you assume that the compromise between the two must be correct. However, if either of the opposite options is incorrect, then the middle ground will also be incorrect.<\/li><li><strong>False cause<\/strong>, or confusing correlation with causation. Two things that co-occur may not mean that either one caused the other. It\u2019s possible that both factors are caused by a third variable.<\/li><li><strong>Anecdotal evidence fallacy<\/strong>. This fallacy involves using anecdotes, or isolated examples from real life, as evidence for a larger argument when more general evidence may not support that argument.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Analyze<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Review the information you\u2019ve gathered to see what arguments you can make from it<\/strong>. To do this, you\u2019ll use <em>inductive reasoning<\/em>. Here are the steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Identify patterns in your information.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Identify questions that need to be answered.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Draw conclusions<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Evaluate<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve formed an argument based on your analysis of your information, it\u2019s time to test that argument and evaluate its validity. The authors recommend that you use <em>deductive reasoning<\/em> to evaluate your argument. Deductive reasoning is the process of going from a theory to a hypothesis and testing it to see if it\u2019s supported by evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Keep Improving<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Note things you did correctly or that made the process easier and remember them for next time. If you do this, you\u2019ll constantly improve your critical thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Problem-Solving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Critical thinking helps you learn, understand, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-construct-an-argument\/\">form arguments<\/a>. Problem-solving incorporates the process of critical thinking but is directed specifically at bridging a gap between your current state and a desired state. There are five steps to problem-solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Identify the Problem<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do this using seven basic questions that make up what the authors call the \u201c5W2H\u201d method (five \u2018W\u2019 questions and two \u2018H\u2019 questions):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What?<\/li><li>Where?<\/li><li>When?<\/li><li>Who?<\/li><li>Why?<\/li><li>How?<\/li><li>How much or how many?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another tool for defining your problem is what they call the SCQH (Situation, Complications, Question, and Hypothesis) framework. Follow these four steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Situation<\/strong>: Identify your current situation and its context.<\/li><li><strong>Complications<\/strong>: What things are not working about the situation?<\/li><li><strong>Question<\/strong>: What questions do the situation and complication bring up?<\/li><li><strong>Hypothesis<\/strong>: Come up with some hypotheses that could address your questions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Form Solutions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use tools such as logic trees to help you identify solutions. A logic tree is a tool that allows you to visually lay out potential solutions so you can consider them more easily. Begin by writing down your problem or question. Then, add branches that show your options and further branches that provide the details of those options. Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/H1D_UBhqpZosqEQx-2lR6-u8h-29xluRnNJ7iy6aAh_pLk56ctSHQQmtDnaBGnQCzWbQqUQ_E13RFrpL0nWh6zrz4H1q8S2s9AtLyGQNABTUAGI8-x4aTlPNuwnlRsKp8OrkAjCeb-eNuiE4lCQFRw\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Select a Solution<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One tool you can use to help you choose is a pros and cons assessment. Rate each item based on how important it is. Once you\u2019ve listed all your pros and cons and given them a weight rating, add up the sum for each column and then subtract the cons sum from the pros sum. If the result is a positive number, this suggests the overall benefit of the option outweighs the negatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Implement Your Solution<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-identify-the-problem\/\">5W2H<\/a> method again to help implement your plan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>What<\/strong> solution are you going to implement?<\/li><li><strong>Why<\/strong> is this the best solution?<\/li><li><strong>Where<\/strong> will it be implemented?<\/li><li><strong>When<\/strong> does it need to be implemented?<\/li><li><strong>Who<\/strong> is going to implement it?<\/li><li><strong>How<\/strong> will it be implemented?<\/li><li><strong>How much<\/strong> effort or cost will it require?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Evaluate the Results<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Note what went wrong and what went well, and use that information to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/make-better-decisions\/\">make better decisions<\/a> in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communication and Storytelling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people have excellent ideas but don\u2019t understand how to structure their presentations. The authors advise you to structure your presentations logically and to use stories to persuade and inform your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, for any form of public speaking, they broadly recommend that you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Know your topic<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Know your audience<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Make consistent eye contact<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Ask questions of your audience<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Structure Your Thinking: The Pyramid Principle<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Structured thinking is key to effective communication. They recommend the pyramid principle for establishing this structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Explain your main idea<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Explain your reasoning<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Explain your evidence<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Structure Stories<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Storytelling helps your audience understand and remember your ideas. It can also build an emotional connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To persuade others, <\/strong>the authors recommend the situation-complication-resolution approach. First, you explain the situation, then the complication (the problem), and then the solution that you\u2019re recommending to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To explain information to your audience, <\/strong>you can use the hook-meat-payoff structure. First give your hook, where you pique their interest by letting them know what they can get out of your presentation. Follow that up with the meat, where you explain the topic you\u2019re trying to get across to them. Finally, explain exactly how they can apply your information to their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-structure-a-story\/\">story structures<\/a> the authors recommend is the five-act structure, or Freytag\u2019s pyramid, which consists of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The exposition<\/strong>, which introduces the context and circumstances of the story<\/li><li><strong>The rising action<\/strong>, in which you describe the events leading to the conflict<\/li><li><strong>The climax<\/strong>, which is the high point of your plot when the conflict is greatest<\/li><li><strong>The falling action<\/strong>, where the conflict gets solved and the moral of the story is revealed<\/li><li><strong>The denouement<\/strong>, or the end of the story<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another framework they recommend is the Pixar story framework to convey information and evoke emotion. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-write-a-story-outline\/\">outline a story<\/a> with this framework by filling in the blanks of six sentences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cOnce upon a time, [blank]. Every day, [blank].\u201d These two establish the setting and context of your story.&nbsp;<\/li><li>\u201cThen one day, [blank].\u201d This establishes your story\u2019s conflict.<\/li><li>\u201cBecause of that, [blank].
