In <em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-be-mentally-tough\/\">Mental Toughness<\/a> Handbook<\/em>, he offers three ways to regulate your feelings and control negative emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn how to control (or prevent) negative emotions by practicing Zahariades&#8217;s three strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-control-negative-emotions\">How to Control Negative Emotions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>The Mental Toughness Handbook<\/em>, Damon Zahariades says you have to embrace, understand, and manage negative emotions to perform at your peak. If you don&#8217;t learn how to control negative emotions, feelings like anger and fear can derail you by leading you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/make-bad-choices\/\">make poor decisions<\/a> or fail to take action, claims Zahariades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll explain three of Zahariades&#8217;s methods for controlling negative emotions regularly, based on the advice in <em>The Mental Toughness Handbook<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-subtle-art-of-not-giving-a-f-ck\/chapter-2#emotions-are-just-a-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck<\/em><\/a>, Mark Manson offers a rationale for why managing difficult feelings may help you perform at your best: <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-subtle-art-of-not-giving-a-f-ck\/chapter-2#emotions-are-just-a-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emotions are feedback tools that point you toward useful change<\/a>. If you feel happy that you washed all the dishes and straightened up your home and can now enjoy your calm space\u2014that will encourage you to continue to keep your surroundings neat and tidy.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zahariades&#8217;s Three Methods <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. To control negative emotions, Zahariades&#8217;s first method is to <strong>rationally analyze anger, fear, and sadness as soon as they arise<\/strong>. Ask yourself whether the negative feeling is aligned with logic and reason and whether it\u2019s hindering your progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-meditation-mindfulness\/\">Mindfulness<\/a> experts agree that you should acknowledge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-emotions\/\">difficult emotions<\/a> as they arise, but they recommend a different approach for dealing with them: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/a-mindful-guide-to-navigating-difficult-emotions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Welcome them with kindness<\/a>. When you approach challenging emotions with warm curiosity, you\u2019ll feel more comfortable examining and trying to understand where they came from, and you\u2019ll be better able to respond to them compassionately instead of with judgment. This will make the emotions less overwhelming and likely to control you and more likely to dissipate without incident. The more you engage in this practice, the more integrated and fluid it will become.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.<strong> Meditating for five minutes each day<\/strong> is another powerful way to control negative emotions, claims Zahariades. During this process, aim to observe negative emotions that arise without criticizing or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/negative-labels\/\">labeling<\/a> them, and challenge the veracity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/stop-negative-self-talk\/\">negative self-talk<\/a> when you become aware of it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Zahariades doesn\u2019t go into detail about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/meditation-tips-for-beginners\/\">how to meditate<\/a> but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/guides\/well\/how-to-meditate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you can follow this guide<\/a>: Find a quiet place to sit, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and focus just on your breath flowing in and out of your body. If thoughts or emotions arise that distract you from focusing on your breath, notice\u2014without judging yourself\u2014that your mind has wandered, then refocus on your breathing. To avoid judging emotions like fear, frustration, anger, and sadness, which Zahariades classifies as \u201cnegative,\u201d recognize that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychalive.org\/should-you-feel-or-flee-your-emotions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no feeling is \u201cbad\u201d<\/a>\u2014emotions are simply emotions with no value attached to them.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Zahariades also says you should <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/practicing-gratitude\/\">practice gratitude<\/a><\/strong> to control negative emotions. Take a few minutes each morning, afternoon, and evening to reflect on things in your life that you appreciate, that have gone well, and that you can celebrate. Doing this repeatedly will give you small victories that trigger the reward system of your brain, leading to sustained feelings of happiness.
