More specifically, he says these goals should be big and bold, not modest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more to learn how to set business goals and set high standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-define-bold-forward-thinking-goals\"><strong>Define Bold, Forward-Thinking Goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To lead a disruptive company, you must <strong>develop big, bold goals for it<\/strong>, insists Lakhiani. Unfortunately, most people and leaders are conditioned to aspire to modest goals. But to accomplish something great, you must learn how to set business goals that are audacious, and constantly update them to be <em>even<\/em> more audacious. If you don\u2019t, your company will languish in mediocrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Some feel that <a href=\"https:\/\/theswaddle.com\/its-okay-to-be-mediocre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mediocrity isn\u2019t such a bad thing<\/a>. Being content to perform at an average level frees you from the uncomfortable pressure to always be the best. Being average also means you get to enjoy life\u2019s pleasures because you\u2019re not always straining to become better. You enjoy better mental health because you don\u2019t always see yourself as falling short of big goals.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, the bolder your goals are, Lakhiani argues, the easier they are to achieve. This is because when your goals are inspiring and audacious, people with the right skills and enthusiasm will be excited by your cause and want to join it. To have such big, bold goals, Lakhiani warns that you must not be too rational. Otherwise, you\u2019ll start hedging and reducing the scope of your goal to something more manageable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: While pursuing audacious goals may seem risky, in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/principles-life-and-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Principles: Life and Work<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/who-is-ray-dalio\/\">Ray Dalio<\/a> seeks to assuage your fears about going after lofty goals. He writes that when you set a lofty goal and start pursuing it, <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/principles-life-and-work-archive-v1\/part-2#1-set-clear-goals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new avenues and actions will become clear to you<\/a>, but you\u2019ll only see those avenues and actions if you set the goal in the first place. This argument may appeal to the more rational goal-setters who don\u2019t want to throw themselves into the pursuit of a highly ambitious and uncertain goal.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lakhiani provides two tips on attaining goals:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip 1<\/strong>: Always speak of your project 10 years down the road to indicate the goal you believe it will achieve in 10 years. Express this goal as if it were already a reality\u2014doing this makes it more likely to happen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: If you\u2019re not sure of where you want to be in 10 years, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/traction\/chapter-3#how-to-set-a-10-year-target\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asking first how much money you want your company to be making<\/a> at that time. Once you know this, you can think of other, related goals. And others agree you should talk about them as if you <em>know<\/em> you\u2019ll meet them: <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/illumination\/the-power-of-saying-things-out-loud-c82daa49330a#:~:text=According%20to%20Carla%20Marie%20Manly,more%20intentional%20about%20our%20thoughts.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Doing this forces you to become more self-aware<\/a> and thus more specific about how you\u2019ll achieve your goal.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip 2<\/strong>: Don\u2019t be afraid to fail at achieving your goal. If you\u2019re afraid of failing, you won\u2019t think expansively enough to create a bold vision. Lahkiani specifically recommends that 50% of your goals should have a 50% chance of failing. Within your company, you should also strive to set goals that succeed only 60 to 80% of the time. If you have a success rate higher than that, it means your goals aren\u2019t big enough.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: A different take on this advice is to <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-10x-rule\/chapter-1#10x-thinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">set goals that are 10 times bigger than what you initially think is feasible<\/a>. Grant Cardone proposes this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/effective-goal-setting-techniques\/\">goal-setting method<\/a>, but, unlike Lakhiani, doesn\u2019t account for the possibility of failure. He believes that if you set huge goals and invest great effort into accomplishing them, you will.
