What are brain-computer interfaces?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neuralink is a medical research company working to develop a safe, effective, and affordable brain-computer interface (BCI).&nbsp;BCIs allow people to control devices such as computers and smartphones with their thoughts, but in theory such devices have extensive applications and possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn about Neuralink technology, what it can do, and what the future holds for the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-neuralink\">What Is Neuralink?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Neuralink Corporation is a company that researches and designs <em>brain-computer interfaces <\/em>(BCIs). As the name suggests, BCIs are devices that (in theory) allow users to control devices like phones and computers with their thoughts.&nbsp;Neuralink was founded in 2016 by billionaire entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/technology\/la-fi-tn-elon-musk-neuralink-20170421-htmlstory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elon Musk, alongside a small team of scientists and engineers<\/a>. According to the company\u2019s Linkedin page, it now employs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/neuralink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around 400 people<\/a>.&nbsp;In this article, we&#8217;ll provide an overview of what Neuralink technology is in terms of how it works, its applications and implications, and the company&#8217;s future endeavors and shortcomings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-it-work\">How Does It Work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\/approach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neuralink\u2019s BCI<\/a> consists of a device called the Link, which is invisibly implanted in the user\u2019s skull, and numerous hair-thin wires connecting the Link to various areas of that person\u2019s brain. The wires, called neural threads, are covered in electrodes that detect brain activity and carry signals back to the Link.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The basic concept isn\u2019t new\u2014a monkey was able to move a mouse cursor <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/archive\/2002\/03\/14\/monkey-uses-brain-wave-moves-cursor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>using a similar implant<\/strong><\/a><strong> back in 2002. <\/strong>However, the BCIs that Neuralink is working on require much more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/technology-is-advancing\/\">advanced technology<\/a> and surgical techniques. To give just one example, the BCI that monkey used only connected to about 30 neurons; Neuralink\u2019s website says that their device will connect to <a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\/approach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thousands of neurons<\/a> to allow users full control over their phones and computers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applications-and-implications\">Applications and Implications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Neuralink\u2019s current focus is on accessibility\u2014allowing people with mobility issues to <a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\/applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use computers more easily<\/a>. <strong>However, communication between a human brain and a computer has numerous other exciting possibilities.<\/strong> Here are just a few examples of what Neuralink technology could do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/patients\/drug-development-process\/step-3-clinical-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Treating neurological diseases and damage<\/a>. In addition to helping patients function more normally, BCIs may actually be able to help a damaged brain develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/creating-new-neural-pathways\/\">new neural pathways<\/a> that work around the injured or diseased areas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DVvmgjBL74w?t=2802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Storing and replaying memories<\/a>. In a press conference, Neuralink representatives claimed that future BCIs could enable users to save their memories like files on a computer, and then access them at will.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On a more frivolous note, Musk also imagines a future where people can play video games inside their own heads\u2014essentially, <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/elon-musk-thinks-neuralink-is-better-than-metaverse-in-long-term\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual reality without the need for bulky helmets and controllers<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-next-steps-for-neuralink\">Next Steps for Neuralink<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Neuralink is hoping to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/all-the-actually-important-stuff-neuralink-just-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">begin human clinical trials<\/a> in 2023. While waiting for approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the company is asking interested people to sign up for its <a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\/patient-registry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">patient registry<\/a> to see if they qualify for the trials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Neuralink is still working on improving its BCI technology in order to make them effective, reliable, and affordable. Company engineers at Neuralink are also developing <a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\/approach\/#:~:text=Precision%20Automated%0ANeurosurgery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new technology to implant the devices<\/a>\u2014the neural threads are too small and fragile for human surgeons to work with.&nbsp;The FDA says that even successful clinical trials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/patients\/drug-development-process\/step-3-clinical-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can take several years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-neuralink-s-shortcomings\">Neuralink&#8217;s Shortcomings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside the exciting possibilities, we must take a brief look at Neuralink\u2019s potential shortcomings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neuralink is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/musks-neuralink-faces-federal-probe-employee-backlash-over-animal-tests-2022-12-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the target of a federal investigation<\/a> following accounts of unnecessarily cruel and lethal animal testing. Reportedly, the company has killed around 1,500 animals so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The linked Reuters article incorrectly states that Elon Musk is the CEO of Neuralink. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/amp\/articles\/elon-musk-fortune-fight-jared-birchall-igor-kurganov-11657308426#:~:text=Mr.%20Birchall%20is%20also%20a%20director%20of%20his%20tunneling%20startup%2C%20Boring%20Co.%2C%20and%20chief%20executive%20officer%20of%20Mr.%20Musk%E2%80%99s%20Neuralink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neuralink\u2019s CEO is actually Jared Birchall<\/a>; Musk is the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/elon-musk-launches-neuralink-to-connect-brains-with-computers-1490642652\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">founder and majority shareholder<\/a>, but he does not hold an executive position within it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, in spite of Musk\u2019s demands and Neuralink\u2019s reckless pace to develop its technology, the company is actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-01\/musk-s-neuralink-hopes-for-human-trials-approval-within-six-months?sref=mIZ1p2Gz#:~:text=A%20couple%20of%20similar%20startups%20are%20ahead%20of%20Neuralink%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20human%20trials.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lagging behind some of its competitors<\/a>.
