Kristin Neff&#8217;s book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/compassion-for-yourself\/\">Self-Compassion<\/a><\/em> assures that you can raise your self-worth with just one simple solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn how to build self-worth by being compassionate with yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-self-compassion-contributes-to-a-stable-sense-of-self-worth\"><strong>Self-Compassion Contributes to a Stable Sense of Self-Worth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn how to build self-worth, you need to build self-compassion. Neff argues that self-compassionate people don\u2019t experience the kinds of harmful fluctuations in self-worth that self-critical people do because their value isn\u2019t rooted in external factors\u2014specifically comparisons of themselves to others and their success or failure at achieving particular goals. Instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/definition-of-self-compassion\/\">self-compassion is<\/a> an internally driven mindset that centers on your whole being. A self-compassionate person recognizes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/failure-is-a-part-of-success\/\">success and failure<\/a> come and go and don\u2019t define you as good, bad, loveable, or unloveable. She says this is an important distinguishing factor of self-compassion from its often compared, deeply hyped neighbor, self-esteem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Research supports Neff\u2019s argument, finding that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/dec02\/selfesteem\">when self-esteem is rooted in external sources, it\u2019s tied to greater social, emotional, and mental health problems<\/a>. A 2002 study of college freshmen found that students whose self-worth centered on physical appearance, academic performance, and others\u2019 perceptions of them reported stress and anger, greater relationship and academic problems, and higher levels of drug and alcohol use and eating disorder symptoms than other students.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neff says that for decades, the field of psychology has wrongly propped up the idea that having high self-esteem (your assessment of your worth) makes you happier and leads to success. She argues that self-esteem is an unstable metric that can fluctuate unpredictably because it\u2019s often based on factors outside your control, for example:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-good-are-you\/\">How good you are<\/a> at things that are personally meaningful to you<\/strong>, which is problematic if, for example, you most value looking young and beautiful\u2014because it\u2019s difficult to do forever.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Your perception of what others think of you<\/strong>, which is problematic if, for example, you\u2019re not innately confident in your intellectual abilities and someone tells you that you\u2019re stupid, which can lead you to feel terrible about yourself.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Neff says that while external factors associated with self-esteem can prompt your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/sense-of-self-worth\/\">sense of self-worth<\/a> to skyrocket or plummet within seconds, self-compassion is always available to you, even during your worst moments. Instead of feeling bad about your failures (real and perceived), you can turn to self-compassion to meet and soothe your pain with kindness, recognizing your failure as an opportunity to grow and connect to others through the common experience of pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if someone tells you that you\u2019re stupid, you can take a moment to say to yourself (as you would to a close friend): \u201cThat was a really mean and untrue thing for them to say. You\u2019re very smart. But I understand why someone saying that to you would be so hurtful because it\u2019s unkind. Fortunately, you\u2019re not the first person someone\u2019s been unkind to and you, like others, will be okay and get past this. Let\u2019s take a few minutes to do something nice for you, like get a hot tea.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>(Shortform note: Using a tool Neff developed to measure self-compassion, researchers found that people who are highly self-compassionate often feel strongly that <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/09\/give-yourself-a-break-the-power-of-self-compassion#:~:text=kind%20rather%20than%20judgmental%20about,approach%20to%20negative%20emotions%20when\">they\u2019re true to themselves<\/a>\u2014which presumably goes hand-in-hand with a stable sense of self-worth. Researchers concluded that self-compassion increases authenticity by reducing negative thoughts.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Different Take on Self-Esteem&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-six-pillars-of-self-esteem\"><em>The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem<\/em><\/a>, Nathaniel Branden departs from Neff\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-self-esteem-and-why-is-it-important\/\">definition of self-esteem<\/a>, arguing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-six-pillars-of-self-esteem\/part-1-introduction-chapter-4#what-is-self-esteem\">to have healthy self-esteem, you have to believe two things<\/a>: 1) that you have the ability to handle your basic life needs (which he calls \u201cself-efficacy\u201d) and 2) that you deserve happiness (which he calls \u201cself-respect\u201d).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have a sense of <strong>self-efficacy<\/strong>, you feel confident in your ability to earn a living, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/building-healthy-relationships\/\">healthy relationships<\/a>, and recover from setbacks, which gives you a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/an-internal-locus-of-control\/\">sense of control<\/a> of your life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have <strong>self-respect<\/strong>, you feel you\u2019re innately good and valuable and that you\u2019ve earned the right to happiness.
