And when you encounter challenges, you don&#8217;t despair because you genuinely believe everything will turn out well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about the benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/importance-of-positive-self-talk\/\">positive self-talk<\/a>, according to neuroscientist and psychologist Ethan Kross. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-supporting-you-with-your-goals\"><strong>Supporting You With Your Goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kross explains that <strong>when your self-talk is positive, it\u2019s an <\/strong><strong><em>internal mentor<\/em><\/strong><strong> that improves your life by supporting you with your goals.<\/strong> Your internal mentor does this in three ways:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>It motivates you <\/strong>by offering encouragement.<\/li><li><strong>It prompts you to assess your progress<\/strong> by reflecting on your accomplishments so far and comparing them to your goals.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>It helps you plan for the future <\/strong>by directing you to engage in behaviors that increase your chances of accomplishing your goals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Questioning the Idea That<em> All<\/em> Positive Self-Talk Is Beneficial<\/strong><br><br>Here, Kross focuses on the benefits of positive self-talk. However, some research suggests that not everyone benefits equally from positive self-talk. For instance, a recent study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2009\/07\/090702110503.htm\">people with high self-esteem benefit more from positive self-talk than people with low self-esteem<\/a>. Researchers asked participants with varying levels of self-esteem to think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-have-a-positive-mindset\/\">positive thoughts<\/a> such as \u201cI will succeed.\u201d Participants with high self-esteem felt slightly better after this exercise\u2014but people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/consequences-of-low-self-esteem\/\">low self-esteem<\/a> reported feeling <em>worse<\/em>. Researchers theorize that when you push someone with low self-esteem to focus too much on positive thinking, they find negative thoughts particularly discouraging.<br><br>Furthermore, this research suggests that <em>how<\/em> you phrase your self-talk matters. Therefore, the internal mentor Kross describes may be most effective when it avoids overly positive statements and instead motivates you, prompts you to assess your progress, and helps you to plan for the future in <em>believable, specific ways.&nbsp;<\/em><br><br>For example, imagine you have the goal to release a musical album before the end of the year. Let\u2019s compare believable, specific self-talk to overly positive self-talk for this situation:<br><br>&#8211; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-inspire-yourself\/\">Motivate yourself<\/a> <\/strong>by thinking, \u201cIf I practice this song every day, I\u2019ll get better at it\u201d instead of just thinking, \u201cYou can do it!\u201d<br><br>&#8211; <strong>Assess your progress<em> <\/em><\/strong>by thinking \u201cI\u2019ve recorded half of my album, and there are only three months left to record. I need to pick up the pace a bit\u201d instead of merely thinking, \u201cYou\u2019ve done great so far, keep up the good work!\u201d<br><br>&#8211; <strong>Plan for the future <\/strong>by thinking, \u201cIf it\u2019s hard to find time to record, I can use some of my vacation days to record songs\u201d instead of just thinking, \u201cI\u2019ll try to record more songs.\u201d<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-helping-you-construct-your-identity\"><strong>Helping You Construct Your Identity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, Kross claims that <strong>your internal mentor helps you form your identity, which makes life easier.<\/strong> Think of your internal mentor as a silent voiceover narrating your life. This voiceover tells a somewhat oversimplified story, highlighting certain aspects of your past to construct a cohesive story about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/your-genius\/\">who you are<\/a>. This story helps you recognize what you want and need in life, and it grounds you in your values so you can be resilient in the face of challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, imagine you\u2019re on a journey toward becoming less of a perfectionist, and your effort to record a musical album is forcing you to confront your perfectionist tendencies. Any time you slip into your old ways, your internal mentor steers you towards success by connecting your past, present, and future identities into a cohesive narrative:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It compares the present to the past: \u201cYou\u2019re being a perfectionist again by trying to perfect each song. In the past, this prevented you from completing songs.\u201d<\/li><li>It imagines a better future: \u201cOn future recordings, be less of a perfectionist.
