Ann Handley, in her book <em>Everybody Writes<\/em>, explains how to use developmental editing and line editing to move your draft from rough to decent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading to learn how to edit your own writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-edit-your-own-writing\">How to Edit Your Own Writing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve written a first draft, the next step is to begin editing it. Eventually, you\u2019ll need to have someone else help edit your work, but, at first, you\u2019ll edit on your own.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in learning how to edit your own writing is understanding the two types of editing that Handley calls <em>developmental editing<\/em>, or editing on a larger scale, and <em>line editing<\/em>, or detailed editing. Let\u2019s look at each type of editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large-scale editing involves confirming that you\u2019re conveying your main idea and purpose clearly and logically and that your piece has a strong lead-in to grab the reader\u2019s attention. Also, make sure that all information on both the paragraph and sentence level is necessary to the whole piece and cut anything extraneous. Finally, identify anything that\u2019s been left out, such as missing research or logical connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: To make large-scale editing on your own work easier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.storyperfectediting.com\/how-to-do-a-developmental-edit-yourself-and-save-lots-of-money-on-editing-in-the-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">try approaching it as if someone else wrote the piece and you\u2019re editing for them<\/a>. It may help to print out the writing so you won\u2019t feel tempted to make edits as you go\u2014save those smaller notes for detailed editing. Take only light notes as you read your piece, and, afterward, write up your overall impression and suggestions as an editorial letter for yourself.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Detailed editing involves making sure that every word conveys something important and cutting words that don\u2019t. Handley recommends being particularly wary of fluff words like \u201cvery\u201d and \u201cpotentially,\u201d and any other adverbs that don\u2019t add real meaning.
