New technologies are helping farmers improve their crop yields and animal management practices. In addition, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/negative-impact-of-technology-on-society\/\">impact of technology<\/a> on agriculture has expanded into conservation efforts, helping conservationists protect forests, endangered birds, and animals at risk of poaching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we&#8217;ll first discuss the two biggest impacts of technology on agriculture, then we&#8217;ll explain two ways technology is positively impacting conservation efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-saving-time-water-money-with-big-data\">#1: Saving Time, Water, &amp; Money With Big Data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Advances in sensing technology are positively impacting the type and quantity of data that can be collected in agriculture. Soil sensors, for example, can now measure water content, temperature, nutrient levels, and pH over small areas, allowing farmers to tailor their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0168169918318076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">irrigation methods<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00380768.2021.1897479\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fertilizer use<\/a> to match local crop needs, saving water, fertilizer, and money. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41528-018-0039-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plant wearables<\/a>\u201d (think fitbits for plants) can be attached to the plant itself to measure growth, UV radiation, and markers of stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advances in data collection technology also allow farmers to keep a closer eye on their animals. Dairy farmers can now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralnewsgroup.co.nz\/dairy-news\/dairy-management\/cowscout-better-than-an-extra-worker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">automatically monitor each cow\u2019s eating, rumination, exercise, and sleeping patterns<\/a>, receiving alerts if there are behavior changes. Cell sensors can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americafem.com\/2021\/07\/12\/how-smart-technologies-contribute-to-happy-cows-and-sustainable-dairy-farming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">measure cell counts in milk<\/a>, which allows infections to be detected earlier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-harvesting-milking-with-robotics\">#2: Harvesting &amp; Milking With Robotics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Robotics is another positive impact of technology on agriculture, being used to identify which fruits or grains are ready to be harvested, then gather them using complex, delicate actions that don\u2019t damage the produce. Robots currently aren\u2019t as versatile as humans (plant-specific robots have to be developed, such as those for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouth.ac.uk\/news\/company-makes-significant-progress-with-raspberry-harvesting-robots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raspberries<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/may\/28\/robot-agriculture-farming-artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apples<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/robots-pick-strawberries-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strawberries<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/horizon-magazine\/worlds-first-pepper-picking-robot-heralds-new-era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sweet peppers<\/a>), and they\u2019re nowhere near as fast, but scientists expect to solve the speed problem soon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In dairy farming, milking robots provide farmers with real-time data on milk production and quality. The robots also allow cows to choose when and how often they want to be milked, and this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/your-next-glass-of-milk-may-come-from-happier-cows-thanks-to-technology-5210516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">makes the cows happier<\/a>. Milking robots can also be programmed to remember each cow and track her health, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qlf.com\/news\/key-nutritional-factors-to-success-with-robotic-milking-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helps farmers prescribe individualized feed supplements<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-impact-of-technology-on-conservation\">Impact of Technology on Conservation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from agriculture, some positive impacts of technology in conservation efforts include embracing new technologies to fight illegal logging, poaching, and extinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-protecting-forests-animals-with-big-data\">#3: Protecting Forests &amp; Animals With Big Data<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960982214008318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">logging detector<\/a> developed for use in the Borneo jungle combines old android smartphones with solar panels. These devices upload audio information to a cloud, where it\u2019s monitored to detect trucks or chainsaws and send an alert.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innovative sensors are also protecting endangered birds such as the California condor. Wind turbines account for <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0107491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hundreds of thousands of bird deaths annually<\/a>; however, \u201cgeofencing\u201d technology can <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s40317-015-0087-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">build a virtual fence around wind farms<\/a> that detects approaching birds. It then turns off turbines temporarily until the birds have cleared the area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-planting-trees-defending-against-poachers-with-robotics\">#4: Planting Trees &amp; Defending Against Poachers With Robotics<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Robotics is also being used to support conservation. For example, an organization called <a href=\"https:\/\/flashforest.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flash Forest<\/a> uses drones to plant trees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamesconca\/2020\/09\/30\/drones-can-reforest-the-planet-faster-than-humans-can\/?sh=53fb940c341f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">much faster than humans can<\/a>. These drones don\u2019t just plant seeds\u2014they drop seed pods that contain an optimum mix of species as well as nutrients and boosters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drones are also being deployed to <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5279322\/drones-poaching-air-shepherd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">watch for poachers<\/a>, giving rangers a chase to stop them before they kill any animals. Drones are protecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/one-use-drones-everyone-can-agree-except-poachers-180950078\/?no-ist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rhinos and tigers<\/a> in Chitwan National Park, Nepal and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2021\/10\/drones-are-a-knife-in-the-gunfight-against-poaching-but-theyre-leveling-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rhinos, lions, and elephants<\/a> in Kruger National Park, South Africa, among other places.
