She argues that coaching is a partnership in which coaches can use reflective practice to help clients examine and challenge deep-seated beliefs that limit them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn more about reflective practice in coaching, according to Reynolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reynolds-on-reflective-practice-in-coaching\">Reynolds on Reflective Practice in Coaching<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Author and transformational coach Marcia Reynolds argues that your top priority during coaching sessions is to stay focused on helping your client <strong>address deeply held assumptions, beliefs, and emotions that hinder their progress<\/strong>\u2014not fixing surface-level problems they present to you. In her book <a href=\"https:\/\/covisioning.com\/coach-the-person-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Coach the Person, Not the Problem<\/em><\/a>, she explains how to use reflective practice in coaching to focus on clients\u2019 deeper beliefs and emotions, helping them to see how particular beliefs and emotions lead them into the same problems and undesirable situations over and over again. Then, they can view those problems and situations differently, expand their understanding of themselves, and make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/switch-by-chip-and-dan-heath\/\">lasting change<\/a>. Therapists were trained in analysis, not empathy, and taught to respond to clients who expressed vulnerability with cool detachment, which discouraged them from sharing more.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can stay focused on clients\u2019 underlying assumptions by reminding yourself as you enter sessions of core principles of the coach-client relationship that de-emphasize surface-level problem-solving, including that you\u2019re a partner who\u2019s there to help your fully competent client reflect on deeper beliefs, not an expert who\u2019s there to solve their problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reflect-back-clients-words-and-emotions\">Reflect Back Clients\u2019 Words and Emotions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reynolds says that using reflective practice in coaching by <strong>reflecting clients\u2019 words and emotions back to them allows clients to more objectively see and examine underlying factors that limit them<\/strong> and consider new ways forward. The reflective process begins with summarizing or rephrasing important points that your client makes, then asking follow-up questions and reflecting back emotions the client surfaces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Therapists support Reynolds\u2019 approach for going deeper, asserting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/happy-healthy-relationships\/202104\/are-you-listening-respond-or-understand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when you listen to <em>understand<\/em> rather than <em>respond<\/em> <em>to<\/em> clients you make them feel heard and validated<\/a>, which can give you more insight into the challenges they face. Similar to Reynolds, they say you can go deeper with clients by putting aside your personal feelings and agenda, suspending judgment, focusing on the other person\u2019s perspective, asking open-ended questions to enhance your understanding of what they\u2019re saying, and summarizing and validating what they\u2019ve said.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reflect-back-by-summarizing-and-asking-follow-up-questions\">Reflect Back by Summarizing and Asking Follow-Up Questions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Reynolds says the first step to reflective practice in coaching is to <strong>verbally summarize your client\u2019s key points, then add short, clarifying questions to get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-understand-anything-deeply\/\">deeper understanding<\/a> of what they\u2019re thinking and feeling<\/strong>. As you do this, you should allow room for your client to fill in the blanks and add additional details and explanation. This back-and-forth dialogue ensures that you have an accurate understanding of your client&#8217;s position while revealing deeper motivations and emotions that your client is experiencing (perhaps subconsciously). By demonstrating to your client that you\u2019re present and listening rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/jumping-to-conclusions-psychology\/\">jumping to conclusions<\/a>, you&#8217;ll receive helpful information that will enable you to guide them to their own realizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Aside from coaching, therapists assert that reflective practice is a component of \u201cvalidation in therapy,\u201d a process that <a href=\"https:\/\/positivepsychology.com\/validation-in-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helps clients see that their words and experiences matter and are being taken seriously, and that their behavior\u2014even if inappropriate\u2014is understandable<\/a>. The process has been found to improve client outcomes and build trust and strengthen the therapeutic alliance between counselors and clients.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get the most out of summarizing and questioning, frame your questions to solicit the following information, which will help you help your client home in on the source of the challenges they\u2019re facing and identify goals to move forward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What are your client&#8217;s needs and wants? Which of these are most important to them?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do they believe they can achieve these things?&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What do they fear will happen if they don&#8217;t achieve their needs and wants?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What has your client already tried, and when? What was the result?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why is your client choosing now, of all times, to ask for help?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Summarizing what your client has said interrupts their automatic thought process, giving them the chance to pause and consider a) whether your synopsis is accurate and b) the underlying meaning of the thought or belief they shared. Reynolds says that summarizing entails three skills: recapping, paraphrasing, and encapsulating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-coaching-habit\/preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Coaching Habit<\/em><\/a>, Michael Bungay Stanier adds that a good question gets to the point without feeling like it came out of a coaching manual. He recommends starting by simply asking, <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-coaching-habit\/1-page-summary#question-1-the-conversation-starter-question-whats-on-your-mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cWhat\u2019s on your mind?,\u201d<\/a> then following up with, \u201cAnything else?,\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s your central challenge?,\u201d and, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d Like Reynolds, he argues that coaches should trust in people\u2019s ability to identify and rectify their challenges, and he says you can communicate this trust by asking: \u201cHow can I support you?\u201d rather than stepping in and fixing their problems.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recapping<\/strong> is when you provide highlights of the issue, problem, or reason your client says they\u2019re having difficulty making a decision or taking an action. It allows you to clarify and make sure you understand the full picture of what your client\u2019s saying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reynolds recommends that you use the same words your client has used if their language is strong, for example, if they say they \u201chate\u201d or think something\u2019s \u201cidiotic\u201d or \u201cwish\u201d someone would do something. Mirroring their words allows you to tap into deeper emotions closer to the root of the issues they\u2019re struggling with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paraphrasing<\/strong> is when you interpret and restate what your client said using different words. Paraphrasing allows your client to evaluate the meaning of their words and emotions and, if they don\u2019t agree with how you\u2019ve framed what they said, to correct or clarify what they meant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reynolds says that because paraphrasing is an <em>interpretation<\/em> of what a client has said, you should be mindful to stay true to what you believe they meant when using reflective practice in coaching. Guessing what they were thinking based on your personal experiences loads external meaning and judgments onto the situation. This pulls you out of the reflective inquiry process, turning you away from the important role of a partner who sees their client\u2019s greatest potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Encapsulating<\/strong> is when you sum up your client\u2019s story in a handful of words. When you encapsulate, clients can agree or disagree with your framing, clarify what they meant, expand upon what they want or need to address, and decide on a particular direction to pursue. Ways that you can encapsulate a client\u2019s story include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stating a bottom line. For example: \u201cBottom line, you want to leave your wife but are worried about how she\u2019ll react.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Making distinctions. For example: \u201cWhen you say you\u2019re <em>\u2018done\u2019<\/em> with your wife\u2019s terrible behavior, are you saying you\u2019re annoyed with how she acts or you\u2019re thinking about leaving her?\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Another Use for Listening Tools&nbsp;<\/strong><br><br>Reynolds presents summarizing tools such as recapping, paraphrasing, and encapsulating as ways to get at clients\u2019 underlying motivations, but you can also use them to ameliorate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/coaching-conversation\/\">coaching conversations<\/a> that take a turn for the worse.&nbsp;<br><br>In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/crucial-conversations\/preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Crucial Conversations<\/em><\/a>, Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Et Al. explore <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/crucial-conversations\/chapter-8#how-to-listen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four listening tools that can help you re-engage someone who\u2019s shut down or blown up<\/a>: Ask, Mirror, Paraphrase, and Prime (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/crucial-conversations-ampp\/\">AMPP<\/a>). The first three of these tools correspond to Reynolds\u2019s questioning, recapping, paraphrasing, and encapsulating techniques, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/priming-meaning\/\">priming<\/a> actually contradicts some of her advice:<br><br><strong>Ask: <\/strong>When someone acts out by going silent or responding to you aggressively, you can bring them back into the fold by first asking what their concerns are from a place of genuine curiosity, to let them know you care about their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/thoughts-feelings-and-behaviors\/\">thoughts and feelings<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Mirror: <\/strong>When the person responds, you can reflect back their feelings through the act of mirroring. This can illuminate inconsistencies in their words and behavior. Like recapping, mirroring can help you tap deeper into what someone\u2019s thinking and feeling.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Paraphrase: <\/strong>When you have a sense of what\u2019s triggered the person who\u2019s upset, paraphrasing and encapsulating their story allows you to acknowledge and ensure that you clearly understand what they\u2019ve said. Though Reynolds doesn\u2019t make explicit note of this, Patterson, Grenney et al. assert that paraphrasing can cultivate a sense of safety for the aggrieved party by showing that you understand their troubles.<br><br><strong>Priming: <\/strong>Finally, if the person isn\u2019t sharing and you feel you\u2019ve hit a wall with them, you can encourage them to open up by offering a guess at what they might be feeling. Whereas Reynolds says you <em>shouldn\u2019t<\/em> guess at what a client\u2019s thinking or feeling, because it risks loading your external judgments onto their situation, Patterson, Grenny et al. assert that doing so encourages them to open up and share information with you.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reflect-back-by-pointing-out-clients-emotions\">Reflect Back by Pointing Out Clients\u2019 Emotions&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Reynolds says that when clients are talking you should pay close attention to subtle changes in their emotions and behavior, which can signal that they\u2019re feeling something different from what they\u2019re saying. <strong>Drawing clients\u2019 attention to these emotional and behavioral shifts gives them the opportunity to pause, consider how they truly feel, and identify deeper reasons<\/strong> that they\u2019re having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/difficulty-making-decisions\/\">difficulty making decisions<\/a> or taking actions that move them forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Reynolds says that pointing out clients\u2019 emotions can help them dig deeper into their thoughts and beliefs, enabling revelations. In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/emotional-intelligence-2-0\/preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Emotional Intelligence 2.0<\/em><\/a>, Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves argue that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/emotional-intelligence-2-0\/chapter-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emotionally intelligent people are already tuned into this deeper level of self-awareness<\/a> and can recognize patterns of their own behavior that are limiting, reflect on the reasons underlying their emotional responses, and understand factors that do and don\u2019t motivate them. This kind of self-awareness can make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/methods-of-decision-making-crucial-conversations\/\">decision-making<\/a> and collaborating with others easier, because emotions aren\u2019t clouding their judgment or interfering with their ability to function effectively.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reynolds recommends three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/coaching-tips\/\">coaching tips<\/a> to reflect your clients\u2019 emotions back to them in a way that will encourage them to examine their beliefs more deeply:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) Point out emotional shifts<\/strong>, including changes in your client\u2019s energy, tone of voice, and inflections and pace of their speech. For example, you might say: \u201cI notice that you just got quiet. Can you tell me where your thoughts are right now?\u201d or, \u201cYou\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/advantages-of-laughing\/\">laughing<\/a> but it sounds like nervous laughter. Can you help me understand where that\u2019s coming from?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) Allow your client to experience their emotions without judgment<\/strong>. You should accept\u2014not try to change, ameliorate or interpret\u2014whatever emotion your client displays. Your goal is to simply reflect your client\u2019s emotional shifts back to them in as emotionally neutral and balanced a way as possible, so your client feels safe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/being-vulnerable\/\">being vulnerable<\/a> with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3) Be inquisitive<\/strong>. Being constantly curious about your client communicates that you\u2019re interested in them. It can also ground you and help you navigate uncomfortable moments with your client. For example, if your client becomes upset or defensive, or if you find yourself feeling annoyed by or judgmental toward something your client says, it\u2019s time to tap back into your curiosity and dig deeper into why they feel the way they do, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-recenter-yourself\/\">recenter yourself<\/a> so you don\u2019t introduce unhelpful feelings and beliefs into your session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Experts add to Reynolds\u2019 suggestions for engaging clients emotionally by recommending that white practitioners working with clients of color <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/culturally-speaking\/202105\/how-talk-about-race-ethnicity-and-culture-clients#:~:text=and%20take%20time%20to%20deeply%20reflect%20on,you.%20Scan%20yourself%20for%20feelings%20of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">take steps to engage in culturally competent practices<\/a>. Listening actively and not judging or responding reactively can demonstrate your interest in your client\u2019s experience and build trust.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exercise: Confront Your Assumptions and Judgments&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reynolds says that reflective practice in coaching can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/be-uncomfortable\/\">be uncomfortable<\/a> because it requires clients and coaches to challenge deep-seated assumptions and emotions. As a result, coaches should create nonjudgmental spaces to encourage clients to open up to them\u2014which begins with acknowledging your own assumptions and judgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Think of a time when you made an assumption about, or judged, someone else.
