According to Michael Sandel, the author of <em>Justice<\/em>, Aristotle used this view to explain politics as a whole as well as the relationship between politics and individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about Aristotle&#8217;s telos doctrine and how it applies to justice and society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-teleology-and-justice\"><strong>Teleology and Justice<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>According to Aristotle, <strong>the <em>telos<\/em> of politic<\/strong>s is to create laws and a society that help people live satisfying and virtuous lives.<\/strong> While liberalism looks to give people the opportunity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/freedom-to-live-heros-journey\/\">freedom to live<\/a> well and be moral <em>if they so choose<\/em>, Aristotle believes that there shouldn\u2019t be a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the definition of \u201cliving well\u201d varies depending on the person, explains Aristotle\u2014<strong>different kinds of people have their own different <em>telos <\/em>(purposes in life) and require different things to achieve them.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, imagine someone who\u2019s directionless and can\u2019t function in society on their own. To Aristotle, this person would have the <em>telos<\/em> of obedience\u2014for them to flourish and live the best possible life, they\u2019d need direction, supervision, and help from a superior. Aristotle says that in this case, enslaving this person is moral\u2014it helps both the enslaved person and the enslaver. However, if the enslaved person rejected their status or tried to escape, then Aristotle says they should go free, since their rejection shows that they don\u2019t have the <em>telos<\/em> of being enslaved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>What\u2019s Your <em>Telos<\/em>?<\/strong><br><br>While Sandel mentions that Aristotle defines \u201cliving well\u201d differently for different people, he doesn\u2019t explore in depth what these definitions are or what they mean. For that, we can look to Aristotle\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/nicomachean-ethics\"><em>Nicomachean Ethics<\/em><\/a>. In his <em>Ethics<\/em>, Aristotle explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/nicomachean-ethics#the-goal-of-human-life\">living virtuously is the <em>telos<\/em> of humanity<\/a>\u2014our purpose or goal in life\u2014and that different kinds of people must emphasize different virtues depending on their abilities. Aristotle believes that these virtues are hierarchical in their \u201cgoodness,\u201d meaning some people are naturally able to become more \u201cgood\u201d than others. Here are the three main categories of virtue that Aristotle believes are the telos of humanity, ranked in order from least to most good:<br><br><strong>1) Obedience: <\/strong>In his <a href=\"http:\/\/classics.mit.edu\/Aristotle\/politics.html\"><em>Politics<\/em><\/a>, Aristotle argues that some people have the <em>telos<\/em> of obedience. This means that how well they live their life depends on how well they obey those above them in society. Aristotle says that obedience is the <em>telos<\/em> of \u201cnatural slaves\u201d (as Sandel mentions), women, and children. According to Aristotle, these groups cannot and should not aspire to higher intellectual or moral virtues\u2014they should just obey.<br><br><strong>2) Moral virtue: <\/strong>While those with the <em>telos<\/em> of obedience simply need to follow what others say is best, Aristotle explains that free men <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/nicomachean-ethics#part-2-becoming-morally-virtuous\">must develop their moral virtue to determine the best thing to do in any given situation<\/a>. He suggests that for these free men, moral virtue is the telos of their social interactions\u2014being moral is the best way they can conduct themselves, and is therefore the goal of the social parts of their lives.<br><br><strong>3) Wisdom: <\/strong>Aristotle claims that wisdom, or philosophical knowledge, is <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/nicomachean-ethics#part-3-becoming-intellectually-virtuous\">the greatest virtue of all and the ultimate <em>telos<\/em> of free men.<\/a> While humans are social and moral virtue must guide those social interactions in a good life, Aristotle explains that the best possible human life will devote as much time as possible to developing philosophical knowledge.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the meaning of the Aristotelian concept of &#8220;telos&#8221;?
