Three days later, Amini was dead. Widespread protests in Iran broke out, spreading across the country in response to Amini\u2019s death and continuing ever since, with demonstrators chanting \u201cWomen, life, freedom,\u201d and \u201cDeath to the dictator.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/10\/7\/iranian-coroner-denies-mahsa-amini-died-from-blows-to-body\">Iranian leaders blame Amini\u2019s death on a heart attack and underlying health conditions<\/a>, though photos show the young woman lying in a hospital bed, her face battered. Amini\u2019s family denies that she had health conditions and says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/world\/2022\/sep\/28\/iran-mahsa-amini-was-beaten-severely-in-front-of-brother-says-cousin-as-women-led-protests-intensi-2502851.html\">authorities struck her head with a baton<\/a>, causing her to go into a coma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the demonstrations arose in response to Amini\u2019s death, they\u2019ve evolved to also reflect a deeper dissatisfaction with the Iranian government\u2019s theocratic rule, drawing uncharacteristically diverse crowds and resulting in some of the strongest and most violent protests in years. Finally, we\u2019ll discuss how the protests may influence Iranian women\u2019s rights and the country\u2019s future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-background-iranian-dress-codes-and-the-morality-police\">Background: Iranian Dress Codes and the Morality Police&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The head scarf, also called a hijab, has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/24\/world\/middleeast\/iran-protests-raisi-khamenei-hijab.html\">symbol of government oppression and citizens\u2019 fight for freedom<\/a> since the 1979 revolution, when protests broke out in response to conservative mandates requiring women to comply with modesty rules that centered on covering their hair and wearing loose robes. His death could result in power shifts and fuel protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-the-protests-may-not-change-iran\">No, the Protests May Not Change Iran<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most experts and analysts assert that the Iranian government, betting on history, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/24\/world\/middleeast\/iran-protests-raisi-khamenei-hijab.html\">will continue to double down on its brutal suppression of protesters and wait for the demonstrations to die out<\/a> as they have in the past.
