Why is it important to encourage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-grow-as-a-person\/\">personal growth<\/a> among your employees? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal mastery is the first discipline in Peter Senge&#8217;s framework for creating what he calls a &#8220;learning organization.&#8221; When every part of your company\u2014in other words, each person within it\u2014is committed to constant personal growth, the organization as a whole will naturally grow and improve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how you can incorporate the discipline of personal mastery at your organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is Personal Mastery? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To create an evolving organization, the people within that organization must be willing to learn. Senge says that you should see your life as a never-ending learning process and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/making-commitments\/\">make a commitment<\/a> to constant growth and self-improvement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>According to Peter Senge, personal mastery requires two things: clear goals to strive toward, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/artist-mindset\/\">creative mindset<\/a> so you can find ways to reach those goals.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Here, Senge is describing what leadership expert Robin Sharma calls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-monk-who-sold-his-ferrari\/chapter-9#how-you-can-practice-kaizen\"><em>kaizen<\/em>: continuous self-improvement.<\/a> Sharma\u2019s method for practicing kaizen is to make a list of weaknesses you\u2019d like to overcome\u2014such as a lack of energy, poor physical health, or not getting enough sleep\u2014and face each problem head-on, one at a time, pushing your limits a little farther each day. For example, if you\u2019re trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-improve-physical-health\/\">improve your physical health<\/a>, you might see how many pushups you can do, then try to increase that number by one each day.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many companies don\u2019t encourage personal growth because they can\u2019t easily measure its effectiveness. Instead, those companies expect employees to focus on their day-to-day tasks and to do them \u201cby the book,\u201d with no room for personal growth. In doing so, they stifle people\u2019s potential and enthusiasm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dedication to constant improvement makes people feel more committed, happier, and more fulfilled in their work\u2014remember, people are naturally driven to learn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-personal-mastery-ties-into-the-big-picture\"><strong>How Personal Mastery Ties Into the Big Picture&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Senge reminds us that, for all his talk about learning and evolving organizations, organizations don\u2019t actually learn; <em>people <\/em>learn and then contribute their improved skills and knowledge to the organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To incorporate personal improvement into your business, Senge suggests building the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/building-a-positive-workplace-culture\/\">company culture<\/a> around it from the ground up. In short, every member of your company, as well as the company\u2019s policies, must support honesty, creativity, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/challenging-the-status-quo\/\">challenging the status quo<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you\u2019re not in a position to do that, you can also try to start it as a grassroots movement within the organization: Practice personal growth yourself, regardless of whether or not the higher-ups encourage it, and try to get your coworkers to do the same. Hopefully, your supervisor will take note of your department\u2019s improved performance and ask how you accomplished it.
