Further, he claims that there are four steps that you can take to reach organizational health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read below for Lencioni&#8217;s definition of organizational health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-organizational-health-definition\"><strong>Organizational Health Definition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What is organizational health? <strong>Lencioni\u2019s definition of organizational health encompasses two main factors. <\/strong><em>First,<\/em> the organization\u2019s goals and standards are clear, consistent, and regularly communicated to everyone in the organization. <em>Second,<\/em> individuals and groups align with the organization\u2019s standards and are dedicated to the organization\u2019s goals. Factor one is <em>necessary<\/em> for factor two to exist. When organizations implement these two factors of organizational health, Lencioni says they\u2019ll be highly effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Lencioni\u2019s concept of organizational health (OH) isn\u2019t new\u2014the McKinsey group, a global management consulting firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/solutions\/orgsolutions\/overview\/organizational-health-index#:~:text=McKinsey%20invented%20the%20concept%20of%20organizational%20health.%20Fifteen%20years%20ago%2C%20we%20challenged%20ourselves%20to%20go%20beyond%20traditional%20components%2C%20like%20culture%20and%20climate%2C%20and%20measure%20the%20%E2%80%9Chard%E2%80%9D%20elements%20that%20drive%20financial%20performance.%202%2C500%2B%20clients%20and%207%2B%20million%20surveys%20later%2C%20we%E2%80%98re%20still%20the%20leaders.\">claims to have invented the concept roughly five years before <em>The Advantage<\/em><\/a>\u2019s publication<em>. <\/em>Their definition of OH is very similar to Lencioni\u2019s. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/what-makes-an-organization-healthy\">they break organization health into <em>three<\/em> main standards<\/a>: the ability to align around common goals and strategies, the ability to execute these goals and strategies at all levels of the organization, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/ability-to-adapt\/\">ability to adapt<\/a> and innovate according to customer needs. Lencioni\u2019s concepts of clear goals and standards and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/employee-alignment\/\">employee alignment<\/a> are included in the McKinsey group\u2019s first two standards, but McKinsey\u2019s third standard takes Lencioni\u2019s concept a step further.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-organizational-health-important\"><strong>Why Is Organizational Health Important?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lencioni explains that organizational health is important for two reasons. <strong>First, it enables organizations to meet their full potential. <\/strong>For strategies, financial investments, goals, and solutions to be effective, everyone must work towards the same overarching goals, uphold the same behavioral standards and values, and understand their role. Without these factors, even organizations with the best strategy, marketing, finances, and technology (what Lencioni calls <em>intelligence<\/em>) will fail to meet their full potential. Their progress will be hindered by politics and conflicting goals among leaders and departments. Further, work will lack meaning, and employee turnover will be higher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/start-with-why\"><em>Start With Why<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/simon-sinek-biography\/\">Simon Sinek<\/a> agrees that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/start-with-why\/chapter-11-12#strong-how-success-can-negatively-affect-your-why-strong\">companies who focus on intelligence (what Sinek calls the company\u2019s WHAT) while ignoring things like clear goals, standards, and values (what Sinek calls the company\u2019s WHY) are destined to fail<\/a>\u2014confusion and disorganization will arise and employees will lose motivation and dedication. Sinek calls this phenomenon \u201cthe split.\u201d He explains that companies are at the highest risk of the split when leaders become disconnected from the organization\u2019s WHY. This disconnect usually occurs because the leader loses sight of the organization\u2019s purpose after finding success, or because they\u2019re replaced with someone who doesn\u2019t share the same dedication to the organization\u2019s WHY.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Second, a healthy organization will be your invisible superpower because many leaders overlook it\u2014<\/strong>they think it\u2019s too intangible to focus on and achieve, are too impatient to complete the process of developing health, or don\u2019t believe in its impact. If you\u2019re dedicated, persistent, and disciplined enough to see it through, organizational health will give you the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/business-competitive-advantage\/\">competitive advantage<\/a> that others are too blind to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Research supports Lencioni\u2019s claim that organizational health will give your company a tangible advantage that\u2019s overlooked by competitors. The McKinsey group found that over the course of a decade, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/organizational-health-a-fast-track-to-performance-improvement\">companies that improved their organizational health reported an 18% increase in earnings and a 10% increase in returns to shareholders (TRS)<\/a>. For context, the average company on the S&amp;P 500 (an index that tracks the stock performance of 500 large companies listed on exchanges in the United States) showed only a 7% average increase in earnings and a 9% average increase in TRS.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-you-create-organizational-health\"><strong>How Do You Create Organizational Health?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lencioni\u2019s process to achieve a healthy organization can be broken into four main steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Create a unified and efficient leadership team that runs the organization.<\/li><li>Establish clear and consistent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/organizational-goals\/\">organizational goals<\/a> and standards.<\/li><li>Achieve employee alignment with and dedication to the organization\u2019s goals and standards.<\/li><li>Maintain organizational health by having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-run-an-effective-meeting\/\">effective meetings<\/a>.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is organizational health?
