In <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/discipline-equals-freedom-jocko-willink\/\">Discipline Equals Freedom<\/a><\/em>, Jocko Willink explains that procrastination can cause stress, which has negative physical and mental health effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out how to get over procrastination so you can be your best productive self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-powering-through-procrastination\"><strong>Powering Through Procrastination<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Procrastination is problematic for several reasons. Willink points out that when you procrastinate, you stress yourself out. Delaying what you know needs to be done causes anxiety and dread. In a competitive context, delaying your progress can also allow your competition to get the upper hand. Worst of all,<strong> <\/strong>the things you procrastinate on now might be put off <em>forever.<\/em><strong> Hesitation only inspires more hesitation in a self-defeating loop<\/strong>. Don\u2019t get caught in the loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Willink, the first rule for how to get over procrastination is: <strong>Don\u2019t hesitate, take action<\/strong>. For example, get up when your alarm goes off. Throw your covers off and move to your feet before you can even think about slapping the snooze button. Starting your day with strict discipline will help you stay on that path for the rest of your day. For instance, because you got up when you were supposed to, you have plenty of time to get your workout in before work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand,<strong> if you fall off the path early, it\u2019s easier to spiral and justify abandoning the rest of your goals<\/strong>. For example, If you hit the snooze button once or twice, you might not have time to exercise before work. So, you skip the workout. Since you don\u2019t have to worry about eating too much before your workout, you might as well have an extra breakfast burrito\u2026or two. Can you see the slippery slope?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Willink says you can <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/setting-yourself-up-for-success-gtd\/\">set yourself up for success<\/a> by removing things that cause distractions or unproductive contemplation<\/strong>. For example, silence your phone and remove it from your desk when you\u2019re sitting down to work in the office or at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-note-on-procrastination\">A Note on Procrastination<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When you think you need a break, take it the next day<\/strong>. Willink says that by the next day, you may realize you didn\u2019t need the break and were simply lacking discipline in that moment. If you\u2019re still tired the next day, rest. The point is to avoid giving in to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/immediate-gratification\/\">immediate gratification<\/a> of taking a break, which might lead to the spiral of procrastination and cause you to abandon your discipline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is Procrastination Really That Bad?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Willink emphasizes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/negative-effects-of-procrastination\/\">negative effects of procrastination<\/a>, but psychological research suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/comparatively-speaking\/202106\/why-we-procrastinate#:~:text=about%20getting%20things%20done%20remains,overtaken%20by%20anxiety%20about%20not%20meeting\">this process is natural<\/a>, and even shared with other animal species. One study that observed pigeons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-complete-a-task-successfully\/\">completing a task<\/a> found that the birds were more likely to respond to signals given near the end of the task\u2019s duration rather than signals at the beginning of the task. These results suggest that behavior is better reinforced closer to deadlines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, maybe procrastination isn\u2019t as bad as Willink suggests? As long as there are deadlines to spur you into action, you can overcome your distractions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/immediate-gratification-2\/\">instant gratification<\/a> during \u201ccrunch time\u201d to complete the tasks that keep you competitive and help you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/reach-your-goals-2\/\">reach your goals<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about goals that require a lot of work or that demand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/learn-by-making-mistakes\/\">incremental progress<\/a> to achieve? If you leave too much of a heavily demanding task to do at the last minute, this could be damaging to your health, relationships, and life in general. For example, if you\u2019re writing a book and leave most of the work until a few days within the deadline set by your publisher, you may have to neglect your family and lose multiple nights of sleep to get the necessary work done. If your goal is to run a marathon in six months, you can\u2019t put off the work of getting into shape. Your body needs time to incrementally adjust to your workouts and recover properly if you hope to run 26.2 miles without hurting yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it\u2019s important to <strong>adjust your long-term plans for procrastination by setting short-term deadlines in order to distribute the workload<\/strong>. Consider using the earlier example from the <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-12-week-year\/introduction\"><em>12 Week Year<\/em><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-12-week-year\/chapter-3#your-12-week-plan\">make a plan<\/a> that works for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Willink\u2019s concern that procrastination may prevent you from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/steps-to-achieve-your-goals\/\">reaching your goals<\/a> altogether still applies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=arj7oStGLkU\"><strong>when you have goals without fixed deadlines<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>For example, maybe you want to repair your relationship with a loved one or start stand-up comedy. Without a deadline to eventually kick you into gear, you might put off these goals forever.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To give yourself a sense of urgency, consider a reminder that <strong>your life is finite and you only have so much time to accomplish your goals<\/strong>. Ryan Holiday, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-daily-stoic\"><em>The<\/em> <em>Daily Stoic<\/em><\/a>, suggests using <a href=\"https:\/\/store.dailystoic.com\/products\/memento-mori-calendar\">a \u201cMemento Mori Calendar\u201d that displays the number of weeks in an 80-year life<\/a> as boxes on one page. He checks these boxes as a visual reminder of the time he likely has left to live. This functions as a literal \u201cdead\u201d-line.
