The same is true for leaders, too. So what makes these organizations and leaders different from others? They start with WHY. In <em>Start With Why<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/simon-sinek-biography\/\">Simon Sinek<\/a> walks readers through everything they need to know about putting WHY first in their organization. You\u2019ll learn that when you start with WHY, you\u2019ll keep your company on track, have happier employees, more loyal customers, and better products. But more importantly, you\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/be-an-inspiration\/\">inspire others<\/a>, which is the key to world-changing success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some <em>Start With Why <\/em>discussion questions to help you apply Sinek&#8217;s advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1: Learn to Identify the WHY<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve had a brief introduction to why a person, movement, or company\u2019s WHY is important, let\u2019s think of some other examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We\u2019ve seen three examples of people and companies that start with WHY, i.e. a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/core-message\/\">core idea<\/a> that motivates them and inspires others. Can you think of another example of a person, movement, or company that starts with WHY? What is their WHY?\u00a0<\/li><li>Now let\u2019s think a little bit more about the WHY and its function. For the company or person you identified above, list at least two ways their WHY sets them apart from their competition. (Some reasons might be loyal employees, a world-changing vision, or radical authenticity.)\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-uncover-your-own-assumptions\"><strong>2: Uncover Your Own Assumptions\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you let assumptions guide your decisions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Think of a time when you made a decision that didn\u2019t quite work out. What were some of the assumptions you had that led you to that choice?\u00a0<\/li><li>Now, pretend you have a time machine. Knowing what you know now, what information would you give your past self to change the outcome of that decision?\u00a0<\/li><li>Keeping this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/philosophical-thought-experiments\/\">thought experiment<\/a> in mind, what are some things you can do to help make sure you\u2019re not making decisions based on false assumptions?\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3: Apply The Golden Circle to Your Organization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you start applying The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/simon-sinek-golden-circle\/\">Golden Circle<\/a> to what you do?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Think about your business or company. What is your WHY?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Now, take a step back and look at how your company operates. What changes could you make to your company that would help put your WHY first?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4: Trust Your Gut\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When has your gut triumphed over your rational brain?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Think about a time when your gut instinct triumphed over the more logical, rational choice when making a purchase. What was the outcome? How would the outcome have changed if you went with your neocortex (or rational brain) instead?\u00a0<\/li><li>Brainstorm at least three ways someone who overthinks decisions might become more comfortable trusting their gut. After all, everyone needs practice to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/master-a-new-skill\/\">master a new skill<\/a>!\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5: Learn to Use the Three Principles\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Is your business operating with a balanced circle in mind?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Now that you know your organization\u2019s WHY, it\u2019s time to apply the three principles of The Golden Circle. Do you think your company <em>clearly <\/em>and <em>consistently <\/em>articulates its WHY? Why or why not?\u00a0<\/li><li>It takes <em>discipline <\/em>to start with WHY, which involves articulating your values as verbs or actions. List two of your organization\u2019s values below, then rephrase them as actions. (For example, if one of your company&#8217;s values is \u201chonesty,\u201d you can rephrase it as \u201cdo the right thing.\u201d)\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6: How You Can Earn Others\u2019 Trust<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How can we earn the trust of those around us?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Think about the people in your life. Who do you trust the most, and what makes you trust them? (We know that trust is in the limbic brain and we\u2019re asking you to use your\u00a0<\/li><li>neocortex\u2014but do your best!)\u00a0<\/li><li>Now, think of a<em> company<\/em> you trust and list the things that make you trust it.\u00a0<\/li><li>Take a look at both of your lists. What are the similarities and differences? And what does that tell you about how companies can build trust?\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7:\u00a0Get to Know Tipping Points\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you creating effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-a-tipping-point\/\">tipping points<\/a>?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In your own words, explain how The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/diffusion-of-innovation-theory\/\">Law of Diffusion<\/a> helps companies find mass market success.\u00a0<\/li><li>Go back and look at the five populations talked about in this chapter. Which products or services make you an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/early-adopters-model\/\">early adopter<\/a>? What categories make you fall into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-late-majority\/\">the late majority<\/a> or laggard population? What is it about this combination that creates such powerful, compelling companies?\u00a0<\/li><li>How can you use The Golden Circle megaphone to help amplify your company\u2019s WHY in your current role?\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9: How to Leverage the Power of Symbols\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you use the power of symbolism in your own organization?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What are one or two of the most powerful symbols in your life?
