In addition to the planetary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/side-effects-of-global-warming\/\">effects of global warming<\/a> (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/why-are-sea-levels-rising\/\">rising sea levels<\/a>, weather fluctuations), there are also indirect effects on our health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about the effects of global warming on human health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-health-risks-of-global-warming\"><strong>Health Risks<\/strong> <strong>of Global Warming<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the climate changes, different parts of the world will face new and worsening health risks. In discussing the effects of global warming on human health, Bill Gates notes that as the Earth warms, mosquitoes will expand into new areas bringing diseases like malaria with them, and heat stroke will become much more widespread and deadly as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/effects-of-extreme-heat\/\">extreme heat<\/a> and humidity worsen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to rising health risks from mosquito-borne diseases and heat stroke, climate change poses an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/existential-threats-to-humanity\/\">existential threat<\/a> for communities worldwide. For example, rising global sea levels have already submerged eight Pacific<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/the-climate-crisis-migration-and-refugees\/\"> islands<\/a> and nearly inundated two more. Estimates show that by 2100, 48 Pacific islands could be underwater. Additionally, the United Nations estimates that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/climate-change-and-disasters.html\">20 million people are already being forced from their homes by climate-related hazards every year<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><br>Despite the clear link between climate change and life- and livelihood-threatening circumstances, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/climate-change-and-disasters.html\">it\u2019s difficult for people displaced by climate change to relocate across international borders<\/a> as refugees because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/en-us\/what-is-a-refugee.html#:~:text=The%201951%20Refugee%20Convention%20is,group%2C%20or%20political%20opinion.%E2%80%9D\">the term has historically entailed persecution<\/a>. Therefore, under the current refugee framework, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undispatch.com\/climate-refugees-explained\/\">families can be denied assistance<\/a> even as their homes become unlivable.
