This would provide many benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reliable and consistent electricity generation: Nuclear doesn\u2019t have the discontinuity problems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/problems-with-renewable-energy\/\">solar and wind<\/a> face.<\/li><li>Non-carbon fuel source: Nuclear reactors run on uranium, a non-carbon and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-long-will-global-uranium-deposits-last\/\">relatively abundant<\/a> fuel source.<\/li><li>Less material-intensive to build: Nuclear reactors are the second-most materials-efficient type of power plant we can build, bested only marginally by natural gas. Therefore, making the reactor itself emits less carbon dioxide than other energy sources.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Gates recognizes public hesitancy to pursue large-scale nuclear power due to the dangers of radioactive waste, the potential for a nuclear reactor meltdown, and uranium\u2019s role in producing weapons of mass destruction. However, he notes that the idea that nuclear is an unsafe option is flawed. <strong>Nuclear power has resulted in fewer deaths per unit of energy produced than coal, oil, biomass, or gas<\/strong>. Additionally, Gates notes that new technology promises to make nuclear meltdowns a near impossibility. Therefore, he explains that<strong> reducing the threat of global warming will likely necessitate a more widespread acceptance of nuclear power.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Is Nuclear Energy Safe? Addressing the Radioactive Waste Problem<\/strong><br><br>While some argue that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/michaelshellenberger\/2018\/06\/19\/stop-letting-your-ridiculous-fears-of-nuclear-waste-kill-the-planet\/?sh=eafb07a562e2\">public perception of the dangers of nuclear waste is overblown<\/a>, the waste <em>does<\/em> have to go <em>somewhere<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/christinero\/2019\/11\/26\/the-staggering-timescales-of-nuclear-waste-disposal\/?sh=3950516129cf\">Some radioactive waste can take up to 1 million years to decay<\/a> to safe levels, making secure long-term storage a critical consideration when running and constructing nuclear power plants. In fact, the timescale of radioactive waste is so long that in 1981 the US Department of Energy enlisted linguists and scientists to help devise a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/shortcuts\/2017\/jan\/08\/colour-changing-cats-warn-radioactive-waste-nuclear-plants-distant-descendants\">warn a civilization 10,000 years in the future about the location of radioactive waste<\/a>.<br><br>Auspiciously, advances in the laser industry could deflect the need to store nuclear waste for tens or hundreds of thousands of years (and the <a href=\"https:\/\/earth.stanford.edu\/news\/steep-costs-nuclear-waste-us#gs.88cjuo\">multi-billion dollar price tag<\/a> that comes with it). Nobel Physics Prize winner professor G\u00e9rard Mourou and two laser companies from Lithuania have developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reutersevents.com\/nuclear\/high-power-sylos-laser-could-transmute-nuclear-waste\">high-powered laser to \u201cbombard\u201d atoms in nuclear waste with pulses of energy<\/a>, potentially decreasing the time it takes radioactive material to decay to just hours. While the technology is still in its infancy, researchers suggest it could become commercially viable within 15 years. It may eliminate a major hurdle in increasing nuclear power production and improving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2019\/11\/25\/u-s-public-views-on-climate-and-energy\/\">public\u2019s opinion of nuclear power<\/a> if it does.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is nuclear energy safe?
