What does the evidence reveal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having to prove your identity in order to vote in a U.S. election seems like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/common-sense-pamphlet\/\">common sense<\/a>. According to surveys, over 80% of people believe it prevents voter fraud. Yet the major parties remain deadlocked over instituting voter ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn if voter fraud is a real problem or just an overhyped issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-voter-fraud-really-a-problem\">Is Voter Fraud Really a Problem?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll examine the key areas where advocates of voter ID and opponents differ most strongly.\u00a0Opponents of voter ID laws argue that it\u2019s a \u201csolution\u201d to a nonexistent problem<strong>.<\/strong> So, how do opponents of voter ID answer the question: &#8220;Is voter fraud real?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perspective #1: Opponents of Voter ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law contends that voter identity fraud is extremely rare, and most alleged incidences stem from administrative errors<\/strong>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/analysis\/Briefing_Memo_Debunking_Voter_Fraud_Myth.pdf\">they found identity fraud incidence rates to be between 0.0003% and 0.0025%.<\/a> The center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/truth-about-voter-fraud\">cites numerous other studies<\/a> with similar findings, including multiple reviews of the 2016 election\u2014for example, an analysis by <em>The Washington Post<\/em> found only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2016\/12\/01\/0-000002-percent-of-all-the-ballots-cast-in-the-2016-election-were-fraudulent\/\">four documented cases of voter identity fraud<\/a>. Court rulings and government findings generally concur that such fraud is rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perspective #2: Supporters of Voter ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Supporters of voter ID, such as the Heritage Foundation, don\u2019t typically cite any modern, documented evidence in the US of widespread fraud by voter impersonation, double voting, or non-citizen voting<\/strong>. Even Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, in writing for the majority that upheld Indiana\u2019s strict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-voter-id\/\">voter ID law<\/a> in 2008, had to reach back to the 1800s for an example of significant voter identity fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of citing evidence, <strong>advocates <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Arguments_for_and_against_voter_identification_laws\"><strong>stress the <em>possibility<\/em> that identity fraud could happen<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>and argue that we should preempt it. Justice Stevens went on to write that while there\u2019s \u201cno evidence of extensive fraud in US elections,\u201d it still occurs and <em>could<\/em> tilt a close election in the future. He cited the Bush-Gore margin of only 537 votes in Florida in 2000 as a reason to worry about <em>potential<\/em> fraud being enough to swing an election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporters also say that the limited evidence for voter identity fraud may be due less to its rarity than to the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2014\/10\/voter-id-myth-crashes-mona-charen\/\">it\u2019s difficult to track<\/a>\u2014for instance, states don\u2019t compare voting rolls to check for double registrations. Also, most states have or devote few resources to looking for this kind of fraud. In other words, there\u2019s probably more fraud than we think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, advocates point to other countries that enacted voter ID and other measures <em>in response<\/em> to fraud. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/britain\/2021\/05\/13\/american-style-voter-id-laws-are-coming-to-britain?utm_medium=cpc.adword.pd&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=a.22brand_pmax&amp;utm_content=conversion.direct-response.anonymous&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw8amWBhCYARIsADqZJoWBglZllXY-u8GbXZcFxp1U1Iv9oz2lzBgGgmSe0sN8nRl2my1hBGQaAmFeEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">voter impersonation was widespread in Northern Ireland<\/a> until the government began requiring identification in 1985. However, this kind of fraud has been rare in Europe outside of Northern Ireland; fraud in Europe has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2021\/06\/01\/in-europe-voter-id-is-the-norm\/\">more often involved absentee voting<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is voter fraud real or a nonexistent threat?
