She also holds appointments at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where she is Chief Science Officer for the Center for Law, Brain &amp; Behavior. In addition, Barrett is a director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.affective-science.org\/\">Interdisciplinary Affective Science Laboratory<\/a>, which studies emotions and produced some of the theories and research on which the book is based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lisa Feldman<\/strong> <strong>Barrett introduces a new theory of emotion, based on years of research, which posits that emotions are neither hardwired into our brains nor universally felt and recognized<\/strong>; rather, emotions help the brain to predict what will happen next based on what\u2019s happened in the past\u2014and to plan accordingly. Barrett calls this <strong>the <em>theory of constructed emotion<\/em><\/strong>. As she sums it up in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/lisa_feldman_barrett_you_aren_t_at_the_mercy_of_your_emotions_your_brain_creates_them?language=en\">TED talk<\/a>, \u201cEmotions don\u2019t happen to you; they\u2019re made by you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lisa Feldman Barrett&#8217;s New Theory of Constructed Emotion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How Emotions Are Made<\/em> examines each element that the brain uses to make emotions (past experiences grouped together as \u201cemotion concepts,\u201d internal sensory input, and external sensory input), then puts them all together in a blueprint that explains how emotions are made. <strong>Lisa Feldman Barrett\u2019s work in the field of emotions shows the following theories:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Emotions aren\u2019t scientifically measurable; they\u2019re mental concepts.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Emotions aren\u2019t universal across cultures.<\/li><li>Feelings and emotions are not the same thing.<\/li><li>Emotions are not reactions; they\u2019re predictions.<\/li><li>Emotions are not innate; they\u2019re constructed.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/can-emotional-stress-make-you-sick\/\">Emotion and illness<\/a> are not as unrelated as they seem.<\/li><li>Your emotions do not absolve you of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/you-are-responsible-for-your-own-actions\/\">responsibility for your actions<\/a>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Other Theories of Emotion<\/strong><br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceabc.com\/social-science\/are-we-born-with-emotions-or-do-we-learn-them-later-evolution-social-construct.html\">Theories of emotion tend to be divided along the \u201cnature versus nurture\u201d binary.<\/a> Evolutionary psychologists, or \u201cuniversalists,\u201d say that emotions are innate\u2014a product of evolution. Social constructionists argue that emotions and behavior are dictated by culture.<br><br>Lisa Feldman Barrett\u2019s theory of constructed emotion rejects the former, but neither does it fully adopt the latter. She agrees with social constructionists that emotions have a social reality, meaning that they\u2019re real because a group of people (your culture) has agreed that they\u2019re real. But she contends that emotions aren\u2019t <em>solely<\/em> social constructs; they\u2019re part of a complex, whole-brain process designed to regulate your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/body-budget-lisa-feldman\/\">body budget<\/a> as well as determine your actions.<br><br>Some theorists take a more middle-of-the-road approach.
