According to Machiavelli, virt\u00fa is the characteristic that stands above the rest. However, it doesn&#8217;t mean exactly what its apparent modern equivalent means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to find out what virt\u00fa is to Machiavelli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-machiavellian-virtue\">Machiavellian Virtue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Machiavelli, virt\u00fa is what makes a prince great. He defines it as their ability to take decisive action and to stand as an individual.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Most translators do not interpret this word, <em>virt\u00fa<\/em>, as its most obvious English equivalent, <em>virtue<\/em>, since Machiavelli rarely uses the word to describe a prince\u2019s goodness or morality. Instead, he uses the word to mean <em>boldness<\/em>, <em>skill<\/em>, <em>courage<\/em>, <em>willpower<\/em>, or <em>strength<\/em>. One translator has suggested that <a href=\"http:\/\/ianchadwick.com\/machiavelli\/addenda\/about-the-prince\/\">the best modern equivalent of <em>virt\u00fa <\/em>for English readers would not be an English word at all, but a Yiddish one: <em>chutzpah<\/em>.<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Machiavelli\u2019s ideal prince is unafraid to affect radical change or to begin military offensives, takes advice without being steered by others, always thinks ahead to anticipate threats, and prioritizes the survival of the principality. To appear \u2018virtuous,\u2019 as Machiavelli defines it, a prince shouldn\u2019t aim to appear morally good, but to appear as someone whose continued success can be relied upon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Machiavelli, a prince lacking in <em>virt\u00fa<\/em> will eventually lose their state, either because they fail to overcome the odds (that is, they were unable to deal with changes in <em>fortuna<\/em>) or because no one respects them as a leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong><em>Virt\u00fa<\/em> and the Cult of Personality<\/strong><br><br>The formation of a modern <em>cult of personality<\/em>, in which a political figure is worshiped as the absolute best a society can offer, often relies on the same characteristics Machiavelli describes with the word <em>virt\u00fa<\/em>. The leader at the center of such a cult will emphasize their <a href=\"https:\/\/usso.uk\/the-authoritarian-heroes-of-liberal-individualism\/\">strength, boldness, and independence<\/a>, promising to do things ordinary politicians shy away from and to enact radical positive change. Whether or not they are morally good is less important than the fact that they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10767-022-09423-0\"><em>good for the state<\/em><\/a>; they will protect it from outside threats and bring it to new heights of prosperity.<br><br>However, their ability to hold onto power is linked to their ability to maintain this image. If it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historytoday.com\/archive\/months-past\/stalin-denounced-nikita-khrushchev\">compromised<\/a> or they <a href=\"https:\/\/bigthink.com\/plus\/beware-the-corporate-cult-of-personality\/\">fail to deliver<\/a> on certain promises, the people\u2019s faith in them is weakened and their leadership, or even the entire state, may collapse.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does Machiavelli mean by &#8220;virt\u00fa&#8221;?
