Practice a Stress-Free Life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-meditation-mindfulness\/\">mindfulness<\/a> practice? Do you want to live a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/stress-free-life\/\">stress-free life<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t solve a problem you haven\u2019t noticed yet, so the first step to treating anxiety is to recognize the behavioral and thinking loops that create and result from anxiety. To do so, you need to practice mindfulness so that you\u2019re more aware of your thoughts and actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is Dr. Judson Brewer&#8217;s explanation of mindfulness, as written in his book <em>Unwinding Anxiety<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-mindfulness-is\">What Mindfulness Is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/mindfulness-activities\/\">mindfulness practice<\/a>? Brewer borrows his definition of mindfulness from mindfulness proponent Jon Kabat-Zinn, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/jon-kabat-zinn-defining-mindfulness\/\">who says that<\/a> mindfulness means: \u201cPaying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally\u201d [sic]. Brewer distills this definition down to two components: awareness and curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Awareness <\/em>means recognizing what you\u2019re doing as you\u2019re doing it.<\/strong> Anxiety and its related behaviors easily become automatic, but awareness allows us to notice when we\u2019re switching into autopilot. Physiologically, our brains have a system called a default mode network that takes over when our minds wander or when we\u2019re caught in common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-break-negative-thought-patterns\/\">thought patterns<\/a> (such as anxious worry about the future or depressive rumination about the past). Brain scans show that mindfulness quiets the default mode network\u2014in other words, it deconstructs the thinking loops that create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/low-mood-and-anxiety\/\">anxiety and depression<\/a> in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Curiosity <\/em>means looking deeper into what exactly you\u2019re doing, why you\u2019re doing it, and what you\u2019re getting out of it<\/strong> (in other words, noticing the trigger, behavior, and result). Brewer says that curiosity also means looking at your thoughts and behaviors with gentle interest rather than judgment or criticism. This distinction is important because mindfulness involves observing objectively\u2014which you can\u2019t do if you\u2019re berating yourself for your thoughts and actions. Brewer says there\u2019s a common misconception that mindfulness involves clearing your mind or getting rid of thoughts\u2014but that\u2019s not actually possible, nor is it the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-the-goal-of-meditation\/\">goal of mindfulness<\/a>. In fact, <strong>being mindful includes noticing your thoughts without trying to control or change them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mindfulness in Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Brewer explains mindfulness in general terms, and while he gives many examples of awareness and curiosity in practice, these examples are spread throughout the book in service of various related arguments. Because mindfulness is the core principle of Brewer\u2019s approach to anxiety, it\u2019s worth pausing here to look at an extended example of how it helps you recognize and break down your anxious patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, <strong>mindfulness helps you notice anxiety as soon as it arises<\/strong>. Say you wake up in the morning feeling anxious. Without mindfulness, you might not realize <em>why <\/em>you feel that way and you might even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-beating-yourself-up\/\">beat yourself up<\/a> for being in a bad mood. With mindfulness, you might notice the anxious feeling and realize that you feel stressed because you have to pay bills today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, <strong>mindfulness helps you interrupt anxious thoughts<\/strong>. When you remember the bills, you might start worrying\u2014Do I have enough money to pay them? Did I already miss a due date? Without mindfulness, you might not even notice these thoughts\u2014you might just feel your stress increasing without knowing why. With mindfulness, you might notice these thoughts and realize that they aren\u2019t actually helping you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third, <strong>mindfulness helps you focus on action rather than worrying<\/strong>. Without mindfulness, you might sit down to pay the bills only to find yourself browsing social media 30 minutes later without knowing how you got there. With mindfulness, you might notice the initial impulse to check your feeds, or you might realize what you\u2019re doing after only a few minutes of checking posts. Plus, instead of beating yourself up for being lazy, you might notice that the impulse to check social media is actually a manifestation of the anxiety you feel about paying bills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a mindfulness practice?
