What are the long-term effects of sleep deprivation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Johann Hari in his book <em>Stolen Focus<\/em>, one of the factors contributing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/attention-crisis\/\">attention crisis<\/a> is sleep deprivation. He believes we&#8217;re not getting enough sleep and we&#8217;re suffering from five dangerous effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading for the five long-term effects of sleep deprivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-are-you-getting-enough-sleep\">Are You Getting Enough Sleep?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hari argues that <strong>sleep deprivation is not an isolated problem<\/strong>. The average sleep time an adult gets each night is an hour less than it was at the beginning of the 20th century. For children, the lost sleep time amounts to an hour and 25 minutes. (Shortform note: The percentage of adults sleeping significantly less than the recommended seven hours a day is so high that the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/think-shrink\/202105\/sleep-is-the-ultimate-holistic-remedy#:~:text=minimum%20amount%20of%20sleep%3A%207%20hours,doubled%20from%2038.6%20million%20to%2070.1\">declared it a public health epidemic<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before getting into the long-term effects of sleep deprivation, Hari cites two possible explanations for widespread lack of sleep:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> <strong>Artificial light.<\/strong> Evolution made humans sensitive to light, but artificial lights interfere with our programming. Earlier humans would rise with the sun and go to sleep by sunset, but they also got a second wind around four in the afternoon, just as the sun began to set. That helped them reach safety or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-complete-a-task-successfully\/\">finish tasks<\/a> before sunset. Now, Hari says, we don\u2019t notice that change in natural light because we rely on artificial lighting. We still get that second wind but later in the evening, when we\u2019re supposed to be getting ready for sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> <strong>Consumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/capitalism-theory\/\">capitalism<\/a>. <\/strong>Sleep deprivation fuels the economy. Our economy relies on people consuming and producing as much as possible, and that can only happen while they\u2019re awake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The availability of artificial light and the changing economy also <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/39\/3\/715\/2454050\">limit your ability to take an afternoon nap<\/a> to offset a night of insufficient sleep. Studies show that many societies considered segmented sleep normal before industrial times. People had the opportunity to nap during the day and adjust their sleeping schedule to match seasonal sunlight and temperature changes. However, the pressure of the economy and the ability to use technology to adjust the light and temperature inside buildings made siestas less common.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-effects-of-sleep-deprivation\">The Effects of Sleep Deprivation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Hari, sleep deprivation diminishes your cognitive ability in five ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> <strong>Your brain can\u2019t make new connections. <\/strong>While you sleep, your brain makes connections among the information you learned during the day. These connections are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/where-does-creativity-come-from-3\/\">source of creativity<\/a>. When you sleep too little, your brain creates fewer connections and becomes less creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> <strong>Your brain can\u2019t store information in its long-term memory. <\/strong>While you sleep, your brain retraces everything you learned during the day. The information moves to long-term storage, where you can access it even after it disappears from your short-term memory. When you don\u2019t sleep enough, your brain doesn\u2019t have time to move information into storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3) Your brain can\u2019t cleanse itself. <\/strong>While you sleep, the cerebrospinal fluid cleans your brain and gets rid of the waste that accumulates throughout the day. If you\u2019re not getting enough sleep, the brain doesn\u2019t have time to clean up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4)<\/strong> <strong>Your brain can\u2019t dream. <\/strong>Dreams typically occur during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep and help you process the emotions you felt during the day without triggering stress hormones. But the most intense REM stages usually happen once you\u2019ve been sleeping for seven or eight hours, which many people never get to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5)Your brain stops <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-pay-attention\/\">paying attention<\/a>.<\/strong> When you\u2019re tired, you have lapses of less than a second in which you stop registering the information that\u2019s right in front of you. These \u201cattentional blinks\u201d result from part of the brain falling asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sleep Deprivation\u2019s Effects Are Insidious<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people are sleep-deprived but don\u2019t notice the negative impact it\u2019s having on their cognitive skills. In <em>Why We Sleep, <\/em>Matthew Walker explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/why-we-sleep\/chapter-7#sleep-deprivation-worsens-attention-and-concentration\">sleep deprivation is an insidious problem<\/a> because when you\u2019re sleep-deprived, you don\u2019t know how poorly you\u2019re performing.<strong> <\/strong>And if you\u2019re <em>chronically<\/em> sleep-deprived, your low performance becomes a new baseline, so you lose perspective. Walker warns that the combination of reduced concentration and an inflated sense of your capabilities in a sleep-deprived state is especially harmful during high-risk activities, like driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to impairing cognitive function for the reasons Hari enumerates, chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/happens-body-dont-get-enough-sleep\/#:~:text=Some%20of%20the%20most%20serious,function%20and%20lower%20sex%20drive.\">sleep deprivation has a host of ill effects on the body<\/a>\u2014for example, contributing to long-term problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, depression, and depressed immune function.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you getting enough sleep?
