Generally, high blood sugar\u2014even without insulin resistance\u2014is associated with cognitive decline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about the role of insulin resistance in Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-insulin-resistance-and-alzheimer-s-disease\">Insulin Resistance and Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alzheimer\u2019s disease often involves a problem with insulin, the hormone responsible for delivering glucose from the bloodstream to the cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without insulin, the cells don\u2019t get the glucose they need to produce energy. In Type 2 diabetes, there is so much sugar in the blood, and so much insulin is pumped out by the pancreas in response, that the cells become desensitized to insulin. The role of insulin resistance in Alzheimer&#8217;s disease is well-established, with studies suggesting those with Type 2 diabetes may be twice as likely to develop Alzheimer\u2019s disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, high blood sugar, even without meeting diabetic conditions, has also been linked to cognitive decline. The higher your blood sugar, the more likely you are to develop dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By the Numbers: Obesity, Diabetes, and Alzheimer\u2019s in the United States<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Metabolic disorders are a leading cause of cognitive decline. The increasing rates of metabolic and cognitive disorders are both telling and alarming. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/data\/adult.html\">Approximately 40% of adult Americans are obese<\/a>. While obesity is often measured by body-mass index (BMI), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2930234\/#:~:text=However%2C%20BMI%20fails%20to%20distinguish,'big%20bones'%20after%20all!\">BMI is far from a scientific measure of obesity<\/a>, the numbers are still a cause for concern.&nbsp;<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/data\/statistics-report\/index.html\">A total of 37.3 million people in the US have diabetes<\/a>, or 11.3% of the population. Furthermore, an estimated 96 million people are prediabetic, meaning their blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be considered diabetic. Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3206399\/\">most people with Type 2 diabetes are also obese<\/a>, and because of the link between Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer\u2019s, it is estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/facts-figures#:~:text=More%20than%206%20million%20Americans,with%20Alzheimer's%20or%20another%20dementia.\">the number of Americans with Alzheimer\u2019s will rise from 6 million to 13 million by 2050<\/a>.
