We&#8217;ll look at two main aspects of the right mindset Ali and Kubba describe: first, believing that both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/hard-work-and-luck\/\">hard work and luck<\/a> matter, and, second, knowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/your-life-purpose\/\">your purpose<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn more about the optimal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/startup-roles\/\">startup mindset<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-startup-mindset\">Startup Mindset<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Ali and Kubba, <strong>the key to entrepreneurial success is leveraging your <\/strong><strong><em>unfair advantages<\/em><\/strong>, the qualities or conditions that give you an edge over competitors.<strong> <\/strong>For example, you might have a lot of charisma, which allows you to easily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-influence-others\/\">influence others<\/a>. Or you might have specialized technical knowledge that allows you to design innovative, time-saving software solutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Ali and Kubba label these professional assets as \u201cunfair advantages,\u201d but Malcolm Gladwell would argue that these assets aren&#8217;t necessarily \u201cunfair\u201d at all\u2014in some cases, they aren&#8217;t even \u201cadvantages.\u201d In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/david-and-goliath\"><em>David and Goliath<\/em><\/a>, Gladwell makes the case that the same advantages that give people power and success are often their greatest weaknesses. For example, in 1917, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/lawrence-of-arabia-david-goliath\/\">Lawrence of Arabia<\/a> was able to defeat the much larger Turkish army in part because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/david-and-goliath\/chapter-1#example-1-lawrence-of-arabia\">the Turks\u2019 numerous troops and supplies hindered their mobility.<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, before we discuss how to find and use your unfair advantages, we need to examine the startup mindset Ali and Kubba say you need to be successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Many business leaders echo Ali and Kubba\u2019s assertion that an entrepreneur\u2019s mindset is the foundation for startup success. One key attribute is a <a href=\"https:\/\/aofund.org\/resource\/entrepreneurial-mindset-5-characteristics-to-cultivate\/\">positive attitude, which will give you the fortitude to withstand business challenges<\/a>. To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/develop-resilience\/\">develop resilience<\/a>, approach mistakes as learning opportunities, then incorporate insights you\u2019ve gained into your future actions.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mindset #1: Both Luck and Hard Work Matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To fulfill one key aspect of the startup mindset Ali and Kubba describe, <strong>you must simultaneously believe that hard work pays off <em>and<\/em> acknowledge that luck can be the difference between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/failure-is-a-part-of-success\/\">success and failure<\/a><\/strong>. While launching a successful startup requires dedicated effort, you may not be able to attain the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/levels-of-success\/\">level of success<\/a> as someone else, no matter how hard you work. In reality, we all have vastly different levels of privilege, luck, and opportunity that influence what we can realistically achieve. For example, if your competitor inherited a fortune from their parents, and you\u2019re self-funding your startup, you can\u2019t reasonably expect your success to equal theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you believe that luck is the <em>only<\/em> determining factor in success, you may become resigned, thinking that nothing you do ultimately matters, so why bother trying? In other words, if you\u2019re internally motivated, you\u2019ll feel like a success even if you don\u2019t achieve the outcome you want because you know you\u2019re trying to do the right thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ali and Kubba warn against being overly ambitious even when you define your other-serving, inspirational purpose. For example, don\u2019t say you\u2019re going to solve global warming, eliminate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/gender-pay-gap-2023\/\">gender wage gap<\/a>, or become the first trillionaire, as those are completely unrealistic.
