Your Focus will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/focus-on-one-thing-at-a-time\/\">single task<\/a> or project that will take 60-90 minutes to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading to learn how to make an important task part of your routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-be-practical-about-your-focus\"><strong>Be Practical About Your Focus<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It may seem like the act of picking a routine task is just one more thing added to your already overburdened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/gtd-to-do-list\/\">to-do list<\/a>. In response, the authors offer several ideas to help establish your Focus as part of your routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, write your Focus down every day. It doesn\u2019t have to be a new one; if you\u2019re working on an extended project, you might repeat your Focus for as long as you have to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Repetition is a valuable tool for learning skills, forming habits, and reducing stress. However, as with anything, it also has an unhealthy side. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/rethinking-mental-health\/202009\/is-repetition-the-key-daily-practice-or-its-killer\">Repetition can act as a crutch<\/a> and can prevent you from making a necessary change. It\u2019s important to remember that sometimes repeating your Focus is beneficial, and other times you need to mix things up.)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knapp and Zeratsky emphasize the importance of determining whether you function better in the morning, afternoon, or evening, and scheduling your Focus for that time. For some people, the early morning is when they\u2019re able to concentrate best. For others, late at night is the only time when they\u2019re able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/remove-distractions\/\">eliminate distractions<\/a>. The classic example is the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/633059\/writer-with-a-day-job-by-aine-greaney\/\">writer with a day job<\/a>\u201d who is only able to work on their own projects when the rest of their family is asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel like you\u2019re lagging on several small projects, you can group them all into one big Focus: \u201cgetting caught up.\u201d However, such activities are more <em>reactive <\/em>than proactive and not particularly motivating. <strong>Normally, you\u2019ll want your Focus to be something to which you\u2019re eager to give your full attention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Early Risers vs. Night Owls<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Science has shown that \u201cmorning people\u201d and \u201cnight people\u201d have different circadian rhythms, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/how-sleep-works\/chronotypes\">chronotypes<\/a>. These differences affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/06\/210622123338.htm\">personality traits, peak energy times<\/a>, and even a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29642757\/\">predisposition to certain health problems<\/a>. However, sleep researcher Kristen Knutson points out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainfacts.org\/thinking-sensing-and-behaving\/sleep\/2019\/are-people-really-morning-larks-or-night-owls-101419\">many of the challenges faced by \u201cnight owls\u201d<\/a> are because modern society favors those whose energy peaks in the morning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For optimal living, it\u2019s important to know how your own body functions throughout the day and to schedule your activities accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting in the Flow<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can hone your attention on one particular Focus and avoid interruptions that might distract you from it, you may find that you become so engrossed in what you\u2019re doing that you enter a state of optimal creativity\u2014a time in which all your energy pours freely into your goal. You may even lose the sense of how much time is passing. Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi defines this experience as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/flow\"><em>flow<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Csikszentmihalyi explains that when you enter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-flow-state-2\/\">a state of flow<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/flow\/chapter-1#flow-a-clue-toward-happiness\">you experience true enjoyment, control over your feelings, and a greater sense of purpose and meaning<\/a>. The key to achieving flow is identifying what specific Focus activities are best suited for your values and lifestyle, whether through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/flow\/chapter-5\">exercise<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/flow\/chapter-7\">work<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/flow\/chapter-8#flow-in-relationships-family-friends-and-community\">personal relationships<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you make routine tasks?
