That&#8217;s the view of Napoleon Hill. In his book <em>Outwitting the Devil<\/em>, he discusses how independent thinkers can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-resist-the-devil\/\">resist the devil<\/a> far more easily than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/passive-people\/\">passive people<\/a> who just drift through life without minds of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more to learn what independent thinkers are like and how this makes them stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-independent-thinkers\"><strong>Independent Thinkers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hill writes that the Devil distinguishes between two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/three-types-of-people\/\">types of people<\/a>: those under his control, whom he claims make up nearly 98% of all people on Earth; and those who have escaped his influence. What separates these two groups is that those under his influence take a fundamentally <strong>passive<\/strong> role in their own lives, while those who have resisted take a more <strong>active<\/strong> role. Much of Hill\u2019s advice to the reader encourages them to take on a more active role, taking control of what happens to them out of the Devil\u2019s hands and into their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid indifference and coming under the Devil\u2019s control, according to Hill, you must set clear goals and pursue them passionately. The person who <strong>knows what they want, thinks for themselves, and refuses to be discouraged<\/strong> by setbacks has escaped the Devil\u2019s influence. We\u2019ll call these people <strong>independent thinkers<\/strong>, since Hill repeatedly stresses that their thoughtfulness and questioning of the world around them is what sets them apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The characteristics of an independent thinker are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are <strong>highly motivated in the pursuit of concrete goals<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/hub\/personal-life\/self\/learn-from-failure\/\">learn from failure<\/a> when it comes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They make <strong>strong personal and professional partners<\/strong>, being confident, generous, honest, and always willing to admit and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/accepting-responsibility\/\">take responsibility<\/a> for their mistakes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their <strong>goals are the main focus of their lives<\/strong>, and they avoid distractions and unhealthy habits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Independent Thinkers Make for Better Leaders<\/strong><br><br>Hill\u2019s description of an independent person has much in common with professor and businessman Stephen Covey\u2019s description of mature and effective leaders from his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-7-habits-of-highly-effective-people\/preview\"><em>The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People<\/em><\/a>. According to Covey, what makes someone professionally successful is their ability to prioritize and devote themselves toward a single goal, their willingness to listen to and try to understand others, and their dedication to constantly improving themselves\u2014roughly aligning with Hill\u2019s three characteristics.<br><br>Hill and Covey differ slightly in that Hill is more interested in taking control of your own life, while Covey focuses on negotiation and working well with others (we especially see this difference in focus in Covey\u2019s follow-up book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-8th-habit\/preview\"><em>The 8th Habit<\/em><\/a>).
