This larger step is broken down into three sub-steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose a realm of your life to focus on<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set three types of goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine your motivating purpose<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 2: Identify Your Inner Nemesis and Its Forms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve set your purpose-driven goals, your next step is to <strong>identify the inner nemesis preventing you from achieving them<\/strong>, writes Herman. Your inner nemesis is a cluster of negative thoughts and beliefs that keep you from rising to the challenge in high-stakes moments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Both Herman and Jen Sincero, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/you-are-a-badass\"><em>You Are a Badass<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>frequently personify mental states and processes. Both authors\u2019 use of personification to explain otherwise complicated and unwieldy principles is effective because <a href=\"https:\/\/daily.jstor.org\/personification-is-your-friend-the-amazing-life-of-letters\/#:~:text=By%20personifying%2C%20we%20often%20assume,it%20increases%20empathy%20and%20understanding.\">humans tend to naturally personify things anyway<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your inner nemesis can appear in a single form or in a combination of forms to prevent you from doing your best: impostor syndrome, inner wounds, and self-created stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 3: Build Your Alter Ego<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve identified the inner nemesis that currently prevents you from rising to the challenge in high-stakes moments, let\u2019s move on to constructing the alter ego that <em>will <\/em>rise to the challenge in high-stakes moments. There are four sub-steps to doing this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Decide on an alter ego<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name your alter ego<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give your alter ego an origin story<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attach an object to trigger your alter ego<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-4-turn-on-your-alter-ego\"><strong>Step 4: Turn on Your Alter Ego<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To use your alter ego,<strong> determine how specifically you\u2019ll wield your trigger object to turn on your alter ego<\/strong>. You must have a simple, repeatable action that officially signals the assumption of your alternate identity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re best served by finding an action that, for you, \u201creleases\u201d your alter ego, proposes Herman. This might be donning the object if it\u2019s wearable, touching or opening the object, or a more elaborate action (many athletes have multi-step routines that enable them to trigger their alter ego).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-5-give-your-alter-ego-a-hidden-weapon\"><strong>Step 5: Give Your Alter Ego a Hidden Weapon<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve just learned how to turn on your alter ego. Now, let\u2019s discuss what to do when even your alter ego faces unforeseen challenges: <strong>Give your alter ego a hidden weapon<\/strong>. According to Herman, your inner nemesis may even attack your alter ego, leading to doubt and the resurfacing of negative self-created stories. For example, if, when you\u2019re giving a speech, your audience protests what you\u2019re saying, even your alter ego Michelle Obama might allow the inner nemesis to sow seeds of doubt in her abilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When this happens, use your hidden weapon: <strong>Reaffirm your best self&#8217;s strengths, values, and abilities<\/strong>, insists Herman. Do this as yourself or as your alter ego, either by 1) talking back to your inner nemesis, which allows you to dismiss the critical self-talk and return to the activity, or 2) by saying a self-affirming phrase that reinforces that you deserve to be doing what you\u2019re doing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of your speech, you might tell your inner nemesis: \u201cYou don\u2019t get to tell me I\u2019m not good at this. Go bother someone else (talking back). I\u2019m a competent orator, and I can hold an audience\u2019s attention (self-affirming phrase).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-6-practice-using-your-alter-ego\"><strong>Step 6: Practice Using Your Alter Ego<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, put all the pieces of alter-ego creation together and practice using your alter ego in low-stakes situations, recommends Herman.
