However, there are risks involved since not every new product or service gains enough traction to enter the next stage. They argue that businesses that are first to enter their markets are typically more successful than those that follow, even if the latecomers have better products. Further, these first entrants tend to acquire and hold onto the largest market share throughout the market\u2019s life cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is due in large part to consumer attachment and perception: When consumers adopt a new product, they become so attached to it that they unconsciously perceive the business that first introduces the product as synonymous with the product itself<\/a>. For example, people often refer to tissues as Kleenex\u2014because Kleenex was the first brand to offer facial tissues. This form of attachment makes it difficult for latecomers to wrestle customers away from early entrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
