Additionally, once you&#8217;ve chosen to hire someone, it can be just as challenging to keep them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some tips on finding and retaining talent from the book <em>Execution.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-find-retain-and-develop-top-talent\">How to <strong>Find, Retain, and Develop Top Talent<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bossidy and Charan say that having <strong>high-quality talent always gives your company a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/business-competitive-advantage\/\">competitive advantage<\/a><\/strong>. The skills and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/methods-of-decision-making-crucial-conversations\/\">decision-making<\/a> abilities of your people will either hinder or advance your company\u2019s success. But businesses don\u2019t always succeed in finding top talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s discuss why businesses often choose the wrong people for leadership roles. A junior manager might say, \u201cJo sets a fantastic example for the whole team. She shows up early, asks smart questions, and goes out of her way to contribute.\u201d These general qualities might make Jo great in her current role, but she may be totally unqualified for leadership. Using a recruitment agency can also save your company time by finding qualified candidates quickly, freeing your employees to focus their efforts elsewhere.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third, leaders can\u2019t bring themselves to say no or deliver bad news. As a result, <strong>they<\/strong> <strong>keep nonperformers on board way too long and elevate underperformers <\/strong>who aren\u2019t ready for more responsibility. This, the authors caution, can demoralize people who <em>are<\/em> performing and cause real harm to the company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Bossidy and Charan\u2019s warning here focuses on protecting the morale of your top performers by not keeping or promoting problematic team members. Deliver straightforward feedback, prompt the top performer to consider their impact on teammates, and help them develop self-awareness.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Choose the Right People<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can you avoid these pitfalls and trust that you\u2019re selecting the right people for the right jobs? First, Bossidy and Charan suggest, <strong>engage in interviews<\/strong> <strong>that dig beneath the surface of education, industry knowledge, and past achievements<\/strong>. But go beyond quantifiable metrics to also assess their interpersonal skills and adaptability. Bossidy and Charan advise you to consider a candidate\u2019s energy, engagement, and ability to manage a high workload.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Keep People Accountable and Support Their Development<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve selected the right people for your team, it\u2019s your job as the leader to both hold them accountable and ensure they are continually improving. As Bossidy and Charan remind us, accountability and constant improvement keep everyone making progress toward the goals that matter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To hold people accountable and ensure their improvement, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step #1:<\/strong> <strong>Make sure everyone is clear about the outcomes <\/strong><strong><em>every<\/em><\/strong><strong> team member is responsible for<\/strong>, their priorities, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/short-term-wins\/\">short-term benchmarks<\/a> they\u2019re expected to hit. That way, say Bossidy and Charan, people can coordinate their efforts to reach the targets that support long-term goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Leaders cannot personally ensure <em>everyone<\/em> at their company is clear about <em>everyone\u2019s<\/em> outcomes, priorities, and goals, especially in large companies\u2014a limitation that Bossidy and Charan don\u2019t acknowledge. If you spot any red flags, consider how you could entice the person to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Risk #3: Not having people with the skills needed for the company\u2019s next stage of growth<\/strong>\u2014Your staff might be performing their current roles well, but that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re equipped to handle increased responsibilities following growth, such as a higher sales volume or launching a product overseas. Bossidy and Charan urge you to anticipate what skills you\u2019ll need next quarter or next year, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/habit-1-be-proactive-covey-7-habits\/\">be proactive<\/a> in having qualified people ready to fill those roles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Risk #4: Letting poor performers linger<\/strong>\u2014Keeping poor performers on board in their current positions can destroy morale, sabotage the business, and send high performers running.
