Repeat<\/em>., dieting for weight loss doesn&#8217;t work in the long term. However, decades of contradictory advice about how and what to eat for weight loss has created immense confusion, a tangle that she calls \u201cdiet brain\u201d: When you no longer have any clue how to eat \u201cproperly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s why dieting doesn&#8217;t work in the long term, according to Stephens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s note: This article is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/hub\/personal-life\/health\/nutrition\/dieting-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shortform\u2019s guide to dieting<\/a>. If you like what you read here, there\u2019s plenty more to check out in the guide!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dieting-is-not-a-sustainable-solution\">Dieting Is Not a Sustainable Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand why dieting doesn&#8217;t work, you need to understand how the body stores energy.  Stephens explains that when we eat, our blood glucose (blood sugar) levels increase. In response, our bodies release insulin, a hormone that stores excess glucose in the liver and muscles as glycogen. If any blood glucose remains after this step, insulin converts it into fat and stores it away. By storing this glucose-based energy, insulin lowers your blood glucose. When your blood sugar runs out and you need energy, the pancreas signals for your liver to release some of its stored glycogen to use as energy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephens explains that diets don\u2019t lower insulin levels enough to deplete your glycogen stores and start burning fat. This is because diets work on the logic of \u201ccalories in, calories out\u201d\u2014that is, eat less than you need and you\u2019ll lose weight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Fung agrees, and he argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/greystonebooks.com\/products\/the-obesity-code\">dieting doesn\u2019t lower insulin levels<\/a> because it doesn\u2019t address <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/peter-attia-insulin-resistance\/\">insulin resistance<\/a><\/em>. In short, chronically high insulin levels\u2014such as from constant eating\u2014cause your cells\u2019 insulin receptors to become insulin resistant: They need more stimulation (more insulin) for glucose to enter the cell. Eating <em>less<\/em> doesn\u2019t solve this because <em>any <\/em>eating stimulates the release of insulin. The solution, he asserts, is to regularly fast for 24 to 36 hours, since fasting gives your body extended time to break down insulin.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While dieting or eating less works temporarily, it also causes metabolic adaptation, a scenario wherein your metabolism slows down to deal with perceived starvation. It works like this: When you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/reduce-calorie-intake\/\">eat fewer calories<\/a> than you need to maintain your weight, your body thinks you\u2019re starving. Then, Stephens says, it makes three changes to handle the situation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The hunger hormone, ghrelin, increases.<\/strong> This makes you want to eat more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The satiety hormone, leptin, decreases.<\/strong> This makes you less satisfied, so you\u2019ll want to stuff yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Your metabolism slows down.<\/strong> This lowers your energy levels and slows you down, so that you can \u201csurvive\u201d until food becomes available again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diet for long enough, and your metabolism settles in at that slower pace<\/strong>\u2014that\u2019s the \u201cadaptation\u201d in metabolic adaptation. Then, you\u2019ll need to eat even less to continue losing weight, since you aren\u2019t burning as much energy\u2014creating a downward spiral of hunger and slowing metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Dieting Also Poses Psychological Difficulties<\/strong><br><br>In <a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9781250255198\"><em>Intuitive Eating<\/em><\/a>, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch explain the psychological dimensions of why dieting doesn\u2019t work. As they say, dieting fails because of both your body\u2019s reactions to deprivation and because it creates a downward spiral in your <em>emotional<\/em> health. The more you try to diet, the more diets inevitably fail you. If you remain unaware that it\u2019s dieting\u2019s fault, not yours, you\u2019ll continually blame yourself and feel wracked with guilt.<br><br>Bingeing is one symptom of this \u201cdiet backlash.\u201d Binging is a psychological condition wherein you fixate excessively on food, feel frequent cravings for \u201cbad\u201d foods, overeat to an extreme level, and lose trust in your ability to eat well.&nbsp;<br><br>To overcome this, realize that dieting simply <em>doesn\u2019t work<\/em>. It fails to take into account the power of the hormones that regulate our appetite and weight\u2014and you can\u2019t overcome such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-balance-your-hormones-naturally\/\">hormonal imbalance<\/a> with willpower. Instead, drop the idea that whether or not you diet \u201csuccessfully\u201d has any bearing on your character. It isn\u2019t a moral issue, it\u2019s a biological one.
