The good news is that emotional states are malleable\u2014you can transform negative emotions into positive ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to turn negativity into positivity, according to mind coach Vex King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-turn-your-bad-emotions-into-good-ones\"><strong>Turn Your Bad Emotions Into Good Ones<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-pay-attention\/\">paying attention<\/a> to how you feel, you can recognize and<strong> <\/strong>turn negativity into positivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>King recommends doing this by first identifying the emotion you feel\u2014is it anger, jealousy, sadness, regret? Then, consider whether these feelings are appropriate\u2014have you made false assumptions, exaggerated the situation, or had a misunderstanding?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, think about the underlying reason you had the feelings\u2014does it stem from insecurity, fear of abandonment, or lack of trust? Now replace the negative emotion by thinking of something positive\u2014remember a time you felt the opposite emotion. Finally, think of how you can rewire your response to avoid the negative reaction next time a similar situation occurs. That&#8217;s how to turn negativity into positivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-benefit-from-negative-emotions\"><strong>How to Benefit From Negative Emotions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/awaken-the-giant-within\"><em>Awaken the Giant Within<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Tony Robbins agrees with King that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/awaken-the-giant-within\/chapter-8#process-your-emotions-in-a-healthy-way\">we can reach a more positive state of mind by redirecting our negative emotions into positive ones<\/a>, and adds that these negative emotions can even be a blessing in disguise. He explains that emotions are internal feedback of external stimuli\u2014when we do or experience something that feels right, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-feel-positive-emotions\/\">feel positive emotions<\/a>, and when we do or experience something that feels wrong, we experience negative emotions. So, negative emotions are invaluable because they guide us toward the life we want and away from the life we don\u2019t. However, while negative emotions can guide us in the right direction, we also can\u2019t let them control our state of mind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-process-emotions\/\">process your emotions<\/a> in a healthy way, Robbins recommends six steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Identify and rationalize the emotion<\/strong>: When we experience negative emotions we can easily become so overwhelmed that we\u2019re unable to pinpoint exactly what we\u2019re feeling. So, take a moment to identify the feeling\u2014jealousy, anger, sadness, disappointment\u2014and then consider whether the circumstances of the situation warrant this response. For example, maybe your friend couldn\u2019t meet because she\u2019s busy studying for a big exam. Robbins says this will immediately take the sting away. Robbins\u2019 first step is a combination of King\u2019s first two recommendations\u2014identify the emotions and consider whether or not they\u2019re appropriate.<\/li><li><strong>Embrace the emotion: <\/strong>Resist the urge to label the emotion as bad or wrong and simply embrace it as feedback that will help you learn.<\/li><li><strong>Decode your emotion: <\/strong>Now that you know the emotion is feedback, consider what the feedback is telling you\u2014maybe you should be more considerate about what your friends are going through before getting upset that they can\u2019t meet your requests. Maybe you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-change-your-beliefs-2\/\">change your beliefs<\/a> or actions to prevent the negative feelings from happening again.<\/li><li><strong>Remember that emotions are temporary: <\/strong>Negative feelings always pass. To help you get over it, think of times you\u2019ve felt this way in the past and consider what helped you get over it. This is similar to King\u2019s recommendation to consider a past experience where you\u2019ve felt the opposite emotion\u2014both techniques use past experiences to create a path to positivity in the present.<\/li><li><strong>Use this experience as a reference for the future: <\/strong>Reflect on what you\u2019ve learned and come up with a few additional strategies that will help you handle the emotion if it happens again in the future.<\/li><li><strong>Reinforce what you\u2019ve learned:<\/strong> Take action to show that you\u2019ve overcome the emotions\u2014for example, take your friend out to lunch after her exam to congratulate her on her hard work and dedication.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can you transmute negative emotions?
