The Slip-Box Method’s Benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ahrens contends that in traditional academic writing methods, you don\u2019t gain regular feedback<\/strong>. For example, you might jot down an idea you\u2019ve learned from a book\u2014but you don\u2019t learn whether it\u2019s useful until you try to include it in your paper several steps later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, Ahrens argues that the slip-box method gives feedback at each stage of the process. The system provides immediate and regular feedback in various ways. For example, by filing evergreen notes in your slip-box, you immediately learn whether a note is valuable: A note you can logically file behind another note and that connects to several other notes within the slip-box is probably a better idea than a note you find only a few connections to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. It Helps You Make Good Choices <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ahrens contends that regularly using the slip-box method improves your ability to make good choices<\/a> when working on your manuscripts<\/strong>. Ahrens explains that writers need to learn how to make good choices because writing often requires you to make judgment calls: For example, if you come up with an idea, you must decide whether it\u2019s worth pursuing further research on or likely to be a dead end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
