What are the benefits of going digital?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a digital Zettelkasten is generally more convenient than a paper one. You can access a digital slip-box anywhere; you can only access a physical slip-box if you\u2019re standing next to it. Having said that, paper slip-box is better for efficiency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s why you should have a digital version of the reference system\u2014no matter which slip-box version you pick.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-digital-zettelkasten-slip-box\"><strong>Digital Zettelkasten<\/strong> (Slip-Box)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While Niklas Luhmann (the creator of the Zettelkasten) used an analog system, Ahrens recommends a digital Zettelkasten. However, using an analog system has undeniable benefits. Writing temporary notes on paper is generally the most efficient and portable method<strong>.<\/strong> Also, if you write them all in the same notebook, it\u2019s easy to know where you\u2019ve collected all your notes so that you can go through them at the end of the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: There are several different ways to set up your digital slip-box system. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/learntrepreneurs.com\/books-reading-better-learning-more\/your-first-five-steps-to-set-up-a-slipbox-in-obsidian\/\">many users set up slip-boxes in Obsidian<\/a>. You might also consider digitizing only part of your slip-box system: For example, if you, like <a href=\"https:\/\/review42.com\/resources\/smartphone-statistics\/\">81% of Americans<\/a>, already own a smartphone, writing temporary notes in a notes app may be easier than lugging around an extra notebook. Alternatively, you might <em>start<\/em> with an analog system and then move on to a digital system, as some users recommend: They explain that while digital slip-box systems are more efficient, starting with an analog system helps you learn the fundamentals.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, one study suggests that handwriting improves your understanding of what you\u2019re writing\u2014so when creating literature notes, handwriting may help you clarify your understanding of the text.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In contrast, a 2019 study suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10648-019-09468-2#:~:text=These%20outcomes%20reported%20by%20Mueller,and%20%E2%80%9CTo%20Remember%20a%20Lecture\">handwriting <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> have such drastic effects<\/a>: Test-takers who took handwritten notes didn\u2019t perform significantly better than those who took digital notes.)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you go the analog route, Ahrens recommends using A6 cards for each literature and evergreen note you create. You\u2019ll also need a place to store your notes. Luhmann used a card catalog cabinet, but something as simple as a shoebox will also work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-can-have-a-healthy-balance\">You Can Have a Healthy Balance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you use a digital Zettelkasten or a physical version, Ahrens urges you to <strong>keep your reference system at least partly digital<\/strong>: Even if you create your literature notes by hand, you should have their bibliographic information in a digital format because most academics and nonfiction writers draft their work on a computer. By using plugins like Zotero, you can easily collect bibliographical information with just a few clicks. Zotero also integrates with several word processing tools, like Microsoft Word, which makes tracking and editing citations within your final work much easier.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: On Ahrens\u2019s website, he recommends other digital Zettelkastens you can use\u2014namely Endnote, Mendeley, and Citavi\u2014but explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/takesmartnotes.com\/tools\/\">he prefers Zotero because it\u2019s an open-source program that is continually being updated<\/a>.
