High-value people seek to do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/fulfilling-work\/\">meaningful work<\/a> as part of a supportive, collaborative team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/teamwork-and-cooperation\/\">the importance of teamwork<\/a> in an organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-corporate-culture-doesn-t-matter\"><strong>Why Corporate Culture<\/strong> Doesn&#8217;t Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall, the authors of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/nine-lies-about-work\/\">Nine Lies About Work<\/a><\/em>, the importance of teamwork in an organization is often ignored when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/building-a-positive-workplace-culture\/\">company culture<\/a> is put first. Organizations emphasize building a strong corporate culture because they believe that it can attract and retain employees. They offer perks and implement policies that reinforce the culture they want to cultivate\u2014for example, they offer free lunches to demonstrate that they\u2019re people-centric or install solar panels to send the message that they\u2019re eco-conscious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: People are so fascinated by corporate culture and its connection with success that the <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.netflix.com\/culture\">Netflix Culture Deck<\/a>, made public in 2009, was a Silicon Valley sensation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/07\/business\/dealbook\/reed-hastings-netflix-book.html\">It was viewed 15 million times by 2017<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/netflix-founder-reed-hastings-house-of-cards-arrested-development\">garnered praise from the likes of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg<\/a>. The deck described the company\u2019s culture of \u201cfreedom and responsibility,\u201d which Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings would later detail in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/no-rules-rules\"><em>No Rules Rules<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the authors argue that <strong>an overemphasis on culture can be damaging<\/strong> in two ways. First, perks and policies that highlight culture may entice people to <em>join<\/em> a company, but they\u2019re not enough to make them <em>stay<\/em>. That\u2019s because these perks only tend to address employees\u2019 surface-level wants and not their deeper needs. Second, companies may force employees to shed their individuality to conform to and preserve the company culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Jim Collins argues that indoctrinating employees into the company culture isn\u2019t about turning employees into unthinking, compliant robots, as Buckingham and Goodall suggest. Rather, Collins writes that it\u2019s necessary to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/built-to-last\/chapters-6-7\">immerse employees in the company culture so that they can be given greater autonomy<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/built-to-last\"><em>Built to Last<\/em><\/a>, he asserts that when employees are aligned with the company\u2019s core philosophy, a company can trust them to think for themselves and make decisions that are good for the company.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-teamwork-is-more-important\">Why Teamwork Is More Important<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors write that\u2014more than having free lunches and other perks\u2014<strong>employees seek to do meaningful work as part of a supportive, collaborative team<\/strong>. Teamwork is important because employees are seen as individuals with unique strengths, making them feel like they\u2019re a part of something bigger, and they won&#8217;t be treated like just another cog in a well-oiled machine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a leader, you have the power to give your employees the team they\u2019re looking for. Instead of immersing employees in corporate culture, the authors recommend focusing on the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-build-a-strong-team-2\/\">building a strong team<\/a>. To do this, get to know each member, ensure they understand their role, recognize their accomplishments, and foster trust within your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The authors stress that strong teams are the key to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/job-engagement\/\">employee engagement<\/a>.
