Sinek explains that there are two conditions your higher purpose must fulfill: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Your company can\u2019t currently have the resources to fulfill the higher purpose.<\/strong> If your higher purpose is easily fulfilled, Sinek says it doesn\u2019t provide the necessary pressure to inspire cooperation and oxytocin production. Your company needs to continually struggle to fulfill the higher purpose. This struggle applies constant external pressure, which inspires your subordinates to collaborate and experiment with innovative ways of fulfilling the higher purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. The higher purpose must serve others.<\/strong> Selflessness is an important element of an effective higher purpose because it\u2019s inspirational, and inspired people work harder and are more dedicated. Sinek implies that helping others is inspirational because it prompts your brain to release higher levels of oxytocin. The happy feelings oxytocin provides motivate you and your subordinates to continue working hard and helping others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, selfish goals, like becoming a leader in your industry or making a certain amount of profit, won\u2019t inspire your employees because that goal only benefits the company, which doesn\u2019t release oxytocin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fourweekmba.com\/amazon-vision-statement-mission-statement\/#:~:text=vision%20statement%20is-,%E2%80%9Cto%20be%20Earth%E2%80%99s%20most%20customer%2Dcentric%20company%2C%20where%20customers%20can%20find%20and%20discover%20anything%20they%20might%20want%20to%20buy%20online,-%2C%20and%20endeavors%20to\">Amazon\u2019s vision statement<\/a> is a good example of an effective higher purpose: \u201cto be earth&#8217;s most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online\u2026\u201d Amazon can\u2019t immediately fulfill this vision because \u201cbe the most customer-centric\u201d and \u201cbe where customers can find anything they want\u201d aren\u2019t static goals: Amazon must adjust its approach as technology advances and people\u2019s expectations for customer service and products change. Thus, Amazon constantly innovates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/ex\/mobilecommercedaily\/amazon-prime-now-raises-bar-with-prime-now-one-hour-shipping\">new customer service initiatives<\/a> and adds products to its stores, attempting to meet that goal. In addition, Amazon\u2019s higher purpose serves others, as the company helps customers find the products they need, which inspires its employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-difficulty-of-nurturing-a-higher-purpose\"><strong>The Difficulty of Nurturing a Higher Purpose<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many leaders struggle to nurture a higher purpose for their company. Experts say this difficulty arises because these <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/07\/creating-a-purpose-driven-organization\">leaders view work as a contract and their subordinates as self-interested<\/a> and only willing to do the bare minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a problematic mindset because it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The leaders believe their subordinates are self-interested and need to be motivated to do their jobs well, so they provide constant external motivation\u2014for example, giving raises to people who improve their profits by 5% a year. The subordinates focus on fulfilling each goal their leaders suggest so they can receive the rewards associated with each goal, rather than looking for opportunities to improve their skills or form healthy working relationships.
