In addition, he says that anyone can be relentless because relentlessness is natural and instinctual.<strong> <\/strong><em>All<\/em> animals, even humans, are born with an instinctual drive to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-overcome-obstacles\/\">overcome obstacles<\/a> and survive\u2014in other words, we\u2019re <em>born<\/em> relentless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 2: The Unstoppable Need to Succeed&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we understand what relentlessness is and what can hold you back from it, we\u2019ll look at those who are consistently relentless: the Unstoppable. In the rest of Tim Grover&#8217;s book Relentless, he discusses the two main qualities you need to be Unstoppable: the need to succeed and the ability to direct your instincts. We\u2019ll start by defining the need to succeed through three different principles that support this quality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/never-stop-improving\/\">Never stop improving<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Put intense pressure on yourself&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Use any means necessary<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Principle #1: Never Stop Improving<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Grover says that constantly seeking improvement is a crucial part of doing everything you can to achieve your goals and therefore is crucial for acting relentlessly. In addition, by constantly pushing as hard as you can to improve<strong>, <\/strong>you\u2019ll<strong> better understand what you\u2019re capable of and how you can use those capabilities <\/strong>to succeed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Psychology suggests that constantly pushing yourself hard, as Grover encourages, can lead to burnout\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/smlr.rutgers.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/Documents\/Faculty-Staff-Docs\/TheMeasurementofExperiencedBurnout.pdf\">a kind of emotional exhaustion characterized by disinterest and cynicism in regards to your field<\/a>. The risk of burnout suggests that there are moments when not pushing yourself will actually better enable you to succeed in the long run, since it\u2019ll make you healthier and keep you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/motivated-to-succeed\/\">motivated to succeed<\/a>. To avoid burnout while still pushing hard, experts recommend you learn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneheartcounselingcenter.com\/how-do-you-know-when-to-push-through-vs-let-go\/\">recognize when you\u2019re pushing yourself out of habit versus when you\u2019re doing it for a worthy goal<\/a>. Others depending on you or having high expectations of you won\u2019t cause fear or panic because <strong>the pressure they put on you can\u2019t be any more intense than the pressure you put on yourself.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Principle #3: Use Any Means Necessary<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To truly push and pressure yourself as hard as you can, Grover argues that you must follow the third principle behind the Unstoppable need to succeed: seeking success by any means necessary.<strong> <\/strong>Grover provides two methods for following this principle: making sacrifices and accepting discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 3: The Unstoppable Direct Their Instincts&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve just explored the first main quality of the Unstoppable, the need to succeed, and discussed how you can productively fulfill this need. Now, we\u2019ll explore Grover\u2019s second Unstoppable quality in his book <em>Relentless<\/em>: the ability to direct your instincts\u2014that is, the ability to use your natural animal instincts to accomplish the complex goals required by your field or discipline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: You might assume that your animal instincts are so hardwired into your mind that you can\u2019t tell them what to do. However, this isn\u2019t the case\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/ambigamy\/201409\/dont-override-your-gut-train-it-wiser-intuitions#:~:text=you%20ignore%20your%20gut%20impulses%20to%20act,your%20gut%E2%80%99s%20doubts%20about%20your%20failed\">the rational part of your mind can actually train your instincts<\/a>. After all, memory and experience can inspire instincts\u2014for example, a child touching a hot stove will learn from that experience, and later will have the instinct to check if a stove is hot before touching it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grover examines three areas Grover says to direct your instincts\u2014knowledge, emotions, and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/primal-self\/\">primal self<\/a> as well as how doing so will help you become Unstoppable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Calling It Quits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing when to call it quits is the last part of this overview of the book <em>Relentless<\/em>. Tim Grover does acknowledge that there will come a time when you have nothing left to prove and are ready to finish up your career or lifelong commitment.
