Why is it so difficult to stop the never-ending stream of consciousness and simply be mindful of what is happening in the present moment? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/being-present-in-the-moment\/\">Being present in the moment<\/a> is the key to relieving dissatisfaction and anxiety, but our thinking mind prevents us from being present. We have this compulsion to always be consumed in thought\u2014worrying, ruminating, and mind-wandering. According to Eckhart Tolle, mindfulness is difficult because we are caught up in the cycle of wanting. It&#8217;s hard to stay mindful in the present moment when you want things to be different than they currently are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s why mindfulness is such a struggle for many people, according to Tolle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-struggle-for-mindfulness\">The Struggle for Mindfulness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we\u2019re unable to be mentally present because we\u2019re consumed with <em>wanting<\/em>, <strong>our ego can control our thinking and behavior, trapping us in a dysfunctional state of mindlessness.<\/strong> Tolle argues that the only way to escape this state is to evolve our consciousness to a higher level\u2014one where we are present in each moment rather than constantly <em>wanting.<\/em> He calls this state <em>being <\/em>or <em>presence<\/em>, but we\u2019ll refer to it as <em>mindfulness.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: The <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/tao-te-ching\"><em>Tao Te Ching<\/em><\/a> also asserts that the state of <em>wanting<\/em> is contrary to how we <em>should<\/em> live, explaining that earthly desires and \u201csuccess\u201d are distractions that <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/tao-te-ching\/introduction#engaging-with-the-tao\">prevent us from living as one with the Tao<\/a>, or the natural order of the universe. Living as one with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-tao\/\">the Tao<\/a> ultimately means breaking free from the constraints our humanity puts on our minds, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/negative-labels\/\">labeling<\/a> things as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/good-versus-evil\/\">good and evil<\/a>, right and wrong, fact and fiction, and being concerned with the past, future, and what we should and shouldn\u2019t do. These constraints are what Tolle would label as manifestations of the ego, and the Taoist solution to break free from these constraints corresponds to Tolle\u2019s idea of <em>presence<\/em>\u2014mindfulness.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-inner-self\"><strong>The Inner Self<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Eckhart Tolle, mindfulness is achieved by connecting with our <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/inner-self-meaning\/\">inner self<\/a><\/em>, rather than the false self-image created by our ego. When we\u2019re connected with our inner self, we\u2019re always in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/state-of-mindfulness\/\">state of mindfulness<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tolle explains that <strong>our <\/strong><strong><em>inner self<\/em><\/strong><strong> is pure conscious energy<\/strong>, the same sophisticated energy that created the functional universe we live in. It\u2019s the force that directs planets to rotate around stars and galaxies to rotate around a center mass\u2014an order that allows for life to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This energy lives inside all things and guides their survival<\/strong>\u2014plants that photosynthesize to live; animals that survive by their instincts; and humans, who are <em>conscious<\/em> of their own <em>consciousness<\/em>. He argues that this sophisticated energy specifically created humans to have this heightened consciousness so that it can experience itself through the human form\u2014so consciousness <em>itself <\/em>could experience consciousness<em>. <\/em><strong>Becoming one with this consciousness, or our <\/strong><strong><em>inner self, <\/em><\/strong><strong>is the purpose of human life<\/strong>, Tolle argues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you struggle with mindfulness?
