However, they all ultimately boil down to basic, fundamental customer needs and wants: 1) to feel good about themselves, 2) to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-relationships-how-to-be-present\/\">connect with others<\/a>, 3) to grow and learn, 4) to feel safe, and 5) to avoid effort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about the five basic customer needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-people-want-to-fulfill-their-basic-needs\"><strong>People Want to Fulfill Their Basic Needs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While people appear to <em>want<\/em> many different things, Kaufman argues that they all make purchases in an attempt to fulfill five basic <em>needs<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>To feel good about themselves:<\/strong> This includes enhancing their well-being, appearance, and status and satisfying sensory desires.<\/li><li><strong>To connect with others:<\/strong> This includes engaging in romantic, platonic, and professional interactions, both online and offline.<\/li><li><strong>To grow and learn:<\/strong> This includes increasing academic or professional knowledge and pursuing interests and hobbies.<\/li><li><strong>To feel safe:<\/strong> This includes protecting themselves, their loved ones, and their possessions from potential threats.<\/li><li><strong>To avoid effort:<\/strong> This includes eliminating tasks that take up too much time and energy or those that require specialized knowledge or resources.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-schools-of-thought-on-what-motivates-us-to-want-things\"><strong>Schools of Thought on What Motivates Us to Want Things<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kaufman\u2019s discussion of customer needs and wants doesn\u2019t explain how we <em>prioritize<\/em> fulfilling them. According to psychologists and marketing specialists, this is essential to understanding the motivations and timing of underlying consumer decisions. Combined with Kaufman\u2019s list of needs, the following four theories will help you understand two things: <em>why<\/em> we want the things we do and how we prioritize those needs and desires.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/wm-introductiontobusiness\/chapter\/alderfers-erg-theory\/#:~:text=Alderfer's%20ERG%20theory%20suggests%20that,self%2Dactualization%20needs%2C%20respectively.\"><strong>Alderfer\u2019s ERG Theory<\/strong><\/a><br>This theory groups our basic needs into three categories and prioritizes them as follows:<br>&#8211; <em>Existence<\/em>\u2014physiological requirements, such as food and shelter, and safety-related requirements, such as health and employment<br>&#8211; <em>Relatedness<\/em>\u2014social connection, the desire to belong, and the need to feel loved<br>&#8211; <em>Growth<\/em>\u2014personal development, satisfaction, and the feeling of success<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-maslows-hierarchy-of-needs-4136760\"><strong>Maslow\u2019s Hierarchy of Needs<\/strong><\/a><br>This theory suggests that our needs fall into one of five levels and prioritizes them as follows:<br>&#8211; <em>Physiological<\/em>: food, sex, sleep<br>&#8211; <em>Safety<\/em>: health, employment, family, property<br>&#8211; <em>Love and belonging<\/em>: friendship, family, intimacy<br>&#8211; <em>Esteem<\/em>: confidence, achievement, mutual respect<br>&#8211; <em>Self-actualization<\/em>: morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem-solving<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marketingwithsaif.com\/murrays-pshychogenic-needs\/\"><strong>Murray\u2019s Psychogenic Needs<\/strong><\/a><br>This theory divides basic needs into two categories:<br>&#8211; <em>Primary needs<\/em> concern our survival requirements and biological demands, such as the need for food and water.<br>&#8211; <em>Secondary needs<\/em> concern our psychological well-being\u2014they fall into five categories: ambition, materialism, power, affection, and information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gqrgm.com\/what-is-self-determination-theory-sdt-why-does-it-matter\/#:~:text=Self%2DDetermination%20is%20a%20theory,needs%20which%20facilitate%20that%20growth.\"><strong>Self-Determination Theory<\/strong><\/a><br>This theory claims that there are three core needs underlying our desires: <em>autonomy<\/em>\u2014the need to feel like we\u2019re in control, <em>competence<\/em>\u2014the need to feel like we\u2019re doing well, and <em>relatedness<\/em>\u2014the need to experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/meaningful-relationships-ray-dalio\/\">meaningful relationships<\/a> with others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why do people buy things?
